I've shot all the groundhogs on my property (I think) and now that deer season is over and the does are too pregnant to shoot on crop damage, I need something besides spring Turkey to hunt. I have 33 acres land-locked by adjacent properties in AG retention. Also got 1,500 ft of frontage on a healthy and swift creek. I ordered a coon squaller for 14 bucks and will hunt the little bastages during the day. I have a couple of questions: 1) what do I hunt with? I have all kinds of rifles but was planning on using a 22lr with CCI velocitors. Will this kill 'em? 2) How do I set up? I have ladder stands down by the creek. I see "coon sign" like tracks in the mud on the creek bank but have also watched videos where guys are calling them during the day and they materialize out of hollow trees and such. Today, there were coon tracks on the seat of one of my ladder stands! 3) What do you do with a Raccoon? I can't imagine eating one, but might get one mounted. Are the pelts worth anything?

Thanks!

Most are hunted at night be careful many Coons out during the day carry rabies And they are edible supposedly but I don't know anyone who eats them

Really we kill them by the scores they ain't nothing but corn thieves
I agree with you there, 4-5 will come everynight to my cornfeeders for the deer after season. They wear the batteries out in my game cam and make me mad watching the vid's of them all night eating corn. I do have a video of a 10 point coming up to a corn pile with a big coon on it. The coon flattens out and bares his teeth with the hair standing up on his back. That buck stops and looks at him, then stiffens his front legs and comes forward and dips his rack down and rolls that coon off in blinding speed. He rolls a couple three times and heads on out to other places. Gotta love game cams :)

Last spring I was out on another farm where I can reach out a bit but was carrying my CZ 455 with the .17 hmr barrel on it. It was around 3 in the afternoon and I saw what I thought was a groundhog at about 200 yards between the harvested corn stalks. I had the Harris on the CZ so I figured what the heck, I'll take a crack at that thing. I did and it reacted weird - kinda lumbered away and then went down in a hole. Still thinking it was a chuck, I went out to investigate and there was the hamburgler in his hole looking up at me. I had hit him but he was very lethargic and was trying to come back out of the hole! That's when I put another .17 in him and then kinda freaked out thinking I might have gotten blood spatter on me. That thing must have been rabid.
