How many guys single feed?

Curious, because I have always single fed my 338 edge and rums because I seated the bigger bullets out so far. Became a habit and now I catch myself doing it with my rounds that will feed.
Only at the range or when groundhog hunting with a particularly long throated 22-250 Ackley that shoots 50s very well just off touching the rifling.

Single feed targets and single feed while developing loads, BUT, I do fill the mag after loads are ready...load each round using the bolt, out of the mag, 1-2-3... and measure each (verify OAL) ...then shoot #1, remove mag then measure round #2, place mag back, rack #2 with bolt, then shoot #2 then measure #3, ect. Just to verify my OAL remains the same...learned that one the hard way. I always chamber my first shot by hand when hunting, never can be too sure.

When I hunted in AK w my 300 H&H! I used to load my rounds long for accuracy but kept 3 color coded 200 gr partitions in the gun for back up! You only need one close encounter to make you a believer in back-up bullets!

Always single load at range. i Do have several rounds that won't fit in magazine because of COAL. Loading to or near the lands makes it tough. I do notice that remingtons are the ones this happens with most. I rarely have this problem with my brownings and weatherbys. So to answer question, only with rounds that won't fit, otherwise I load magazine up

I often wonder how many bullet fail threads are related to rounds in the mag, I know I've had Accubond tips broken of from getting jack hammered in a mag box, I know Cutting edge bullets will get the tips jacked in a mag box and even feeding up the ramp. Berger's will get beat as well.
I was entering a match with 140 elds. I had the ammo box sitting on my tailgate and knocked them off. 20 or so had the tips broken off.

My M99 requires it as does my Browning rolling block otherwise it's full to the hilt magazines as that's a safe place to put rounds as opposed to on the stock or somewhere else on the guns outside IMHO 😔

I'm guilty too !
I only single feed 6 of my 338's ! 🤣
Those Bergers like to be way out there .
I'm in Grizz country every trip out it seems here in Montana. I dont sweat it though .
I tracked a Grizzly once down by Helmville yes it was crazy but it sure was exciting !!
Look at my picture , it brings back memories everytime I see it !
Anyway I'm headed towards a 375 Rum build next ...it will be single feed too !!
Look at all the 4" boxes I saved !

One and Done is what we all look for anyway right !!

Rum Man
Acquire and fire for me in Idaho with 23 one-shot elk kills. I usually hunt with three rounds, but if I'm using a longer hand load, I will use a single shot follower and a two round holder. I do not hunt where grizzly are in Idaho. A Ruger No. 1 in Ruger .204 is rock chuck killer.

The bear thing has come up several times. Have any of you thought about having a different round in the mag that uses a shorter OAL for such an event?

A new post on "How do you hunt safe in bear country" seems fitting. If I am in bear country and truly concerned, I strap the rifle and carry a 23" 870 all purpose with 2 71/2s followed by 4Buck x 3. I am more scared of lions actually, and I am quicker and much deadlier with a pump 12. Nothing cuts like magnum 12 lead at 20 feet.

It looks like we are pretty much in this together. I don't believe I've magazine fed in over 5 years, and that may have only been one occasion. Other than that, almost never in about 40 years. But then again, everything is hand loaded ammunition. Nice thread, by the way.

Warning! This thread is more than 5 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
