Ok I'm as dumb as they come on gunsmithing. With that said I picked a 30-06 tikka up this evening off the neighbor kid for dirt cheap. I've always wanted a 338-06 . Would this be a good platform to make into a 338-06? I know the bolt would work . Should just be a barrel swap correct??
I've been watching all our local shops around for a cheap savage or Stevens to do this project with and could never find one suitable. For what I got this for I could stay well under what I'd planned on possibly spending. That is if tikkas are fairly easy to do a swap on . I've got several gun smiths fairly close . I've just never owned a tikka before or messed with any smithing at all

Yep just get a barrel chamber and slap in on. In on my 2nd tikka build now. Smooth bolt, I would reccomend a trigger spring change., Mt bottom metal and mesa precision stock.

Tikka actions operate smoother than glass. You can get sloped Pic rails for them, and the bolt handle can be replaced with an angled, big-knob thing without tools. I got a nice bolt shroud from a place in Norway called Vertebrae for something like fifty-five bucks. No tools required to put it on. I suspect the receiver mouth is threaded in metric but from the research I've done, a competent machinist can change-out the gears in his lathe to cut a metric thread. A place that can surely cut a metric thread is Wright Armory in Mesa, Arizona. They have a downloadable order form on their website (lower left on the front page). You download it, fill it out and get your project on the road...

Tikkas are great rifles to build off of. Find the barrel of your liking and have a smith chamber and install. You'll be good to go.

I've only chambered a few barrels for tikkas and 1"-16 works fine. Sounds like a good build. You'll be seating them pretty close to saami coal but that doesn't mean it won't be accurate

Tikka are made by sako and very good rifles ! Should be easy to swap and make new rifles from them !

I sent a Tikka t3 06 to JES about 5 or 6 years ago. He bored it out, it is now a 35 whelen. He did an excellent job. This rifle is very accurate. I have never shot a bad group with it. Usually cloverleaf 3 shots.I would recommend him and definitely would use him again myself. He is very knowledgeable and been at it a long time. No B.S. and quick turnaround. When I called the business, he answered the phone.
