7mm bullet for lower velocity

I make reduced loads for the neighbors boy. 7-08 with 120 nosler bt at 2500 fps. They have virtually no recoil from a model 7. Kills deer no problem.

Hi Chris

My firatvrecommentadion would be the Hornady 139gr SST followed closely by the Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tip and the Ballistic Silvertip.

The SST holds together a little better than the Ballistic Tip and its great for behind the shoulder shots if you want to save some meat. Id you like shoulder shots it will also work great and go through bone without a problem.

I've tried the Hornady 139gr Interlocks and they also kill fast but too much bloodshot meat, especially if you hit bone.

Hope this helps

For deer sized game I've always liked the 145 Gr Speer SBT. In my 7/08 I load it to 2900 ft/sec from my 24" barrel with WW760 and accuracy is great. Price is also great.

Ok there is another thread on 7mm bullet, but most where for higher velocity rounds and did not want to derail anyones thread. I have my 7mm mag that my go to hunting rifle. I am how ever working on loads for two 7mm mausers and new 7mm-08 AR10. Looking for thoughts on best performing bullets in the 2600 to 2800 fps range for hunting whitetail deer. Mostly 130 to 150 gr bullets with some heavier. My normal range around here are 300 yrds and under with occasional but rare 400 yrd open field shots.

Nosler ballistic tips...not accubonds for lowered velocity.

Sierra game Kings with the lead tip...not the game changer or hollow point for lowered velocity.

Hornady SSt is would work too but I'm personally not a fan.

I'm getting almost 3000 FPS with the 120 gr ballistic tips . They are absolutely devastating on whitetail for sure. Have killed 3 with them this season so far and all have been bang flops. And they shoot very well out of my gun

My wife has killed an antelope and cow elk with her 7-08. Both fell to a Hornady 139gr Interlock. Antelope was taken at 277yds facing her from uphill. I found the bullet lodged in the spine at the base of the neck. Dropped in his tracks. Her elk was taken at 175yds broadside. Perfect shot behind the shoulder. Bullet passed through and she dropped within 1 foot of where she stood. Hard to imagine a bullet doing better.

I could show several pic's (if I knew how to upload them) of deer, coyotes and a few bobcat taken with 140gr Accubonds with a starting muzzel velocity of 2650-2750fps out of a 7/08 & 280 Rem, distances from close to right at 400 yds, all dead, little to no tracking required. Yes they work well with behind the shoulder shots, but in my opinion based upon actual dead critters, once you start around the 400 yd mark they so need a little more resistant (shoulder or bone) to initiate expansion. From point blank to 300yds there is no problem with expansion on behind the shoulder shots and if you actually make a mistake and hit a shoulder dead center at close range you don't have bullet blow up like you do with SST's and BT's.

I never said they wouldn't work... just the BT is better. I used accubonds on the one and only elk hunt I've ever been on out of a .308. Worked perfectly! But the same load buzzed right through 4 whitetails with double lung shots and each animal traveled over 50yds. When I asked a nosler rep about it at the shot shot he slip a box of BT's at me and said "that's your 308 whitetail bullets."
