Kicking around the idea for a top tier hunting scope. Would like to hear from folks that have experience with these two or even the Kahles 318i...the good and the bad.
Thanks in advance!

I'd say the Kahles and ATACR are a pretty even match glass wise. I had a 525i for a little while and I still have an ATACR. I just couldn't get used to the top mounted parallax adjustment. Try shooting behind both before making the decision.

I just went through this same thing. I ended up buying the K525i. Here are the reasons: The Kahles has less tunneling at low power than the ATACR. It has better glass IMO, resolution is noticeably better. I am really liking the windage on the left. I have always dialed for elevation and held for wind. This scope is so easy to dial for wind while in the gun, why not? One thing I do agree with is get your hands on both before making such a large financial decision. Everyone's eyes are different, and they react differently to different coatings. They are both fine scopes. They both also have enough FOV and a usable reticle on low power. Pretty important in a hunting scope. Both are also a fine choice. I like GMC trucks, You might prefer a Ford. I do like the Kahles better, you may also, or not.

You never did say of you were looking for an MOA or Mil based scope. Or if you want an F1 NF. The NF MOAR is one fast reticle if you favor to dial some wind. The MOAK from Kahles to me was tough, it's lines on the horizontal plane extend above and below the line, making picking up misses tough at times. And the Mil C from NF is almost the same.
Kahles has some nice simple mil reticles, SKMR & SKMR 3, I favor the Kahles just for the reticles and the forgiving focus or parallax whatever you want to call it, set at 300, you will be good to 1K, maybe beyond. Where with the NF F1 Atacr you will never use more than 1/4 of the dial. I had the 5-25 F1 Atacr, today I have 3 525i's, still shoot the NF 7-35 F1, and after setting the parallax, my focus knob is on 275 to hit at 2K, it is a fine adj to say the least.
As for glass, not sure if it is called CA, but the NF pops, it brings out or separates colors the Kahles is not capable of, not saying the picture is clearer though. If target acquisition was a major factor in buying, I would lean on the NF.
To me, 45 min before dark, all NF reticles seem to fade out, but at 20 min to dark, there is none finer. But I have never tried to illuminate my reticles either, may make a difference.
If NF had a reticle other than the MOAR I could get behind, I would revisit them.
EDIT: As for tunneling on an NF F1, they have all but eliminated it, spans 1 power max, way better than the older 2nd focal models.

If weight is not a concern the ATACR 5-25/7-35 would be a great choice. If weight was a concern the NX8 4-32 is a great scope also. I own two and absolutely love them. They aren't quite as clear as my ATACR but it isn't a $1500 difference to me.

I have no personal experience with Kahles aside from shooting a few at the range.

I believe NF is hard to beat for an off the bench rifle.

I have a NF ATACR F1 7-35 in the new MIL-XT reticle. Absolutely love the fact that it is has .2 MIL substensions. The Kahles only has .5 excelt between the 2 & 3 mil marks where it is broken down into .2. Rumor is Kahles is coming out with a .2 reticle shortly.

No, the SMKR3 has .1mil spacing.
