so i had a random thought reading my nosler book tonight. Both rifles using the AccuBond long range bullets with there fastest load data, which one has the better ballistics to 1000??? The 270wsm is starting out 217 FPS faster than the 7rem mag but the big 7 has a higher BC... I'm thinking the 7 is going to be playing catch-up out to almost 1000 possibly farther. Neither one is a slouch in regards to BC. Idk just me thinking random stuff! What is everyone's opinions. Eventually I'll test it out when my rifle is finished.

One of the things a lot of people miss is impact velocity needed to expand a given bullet. Unless you are Waaaay out there, a bullet starting at 200' faster with similar diameter and construction will often perform better out to say 800 yards. Realistically, what percentage of game is taken beyond that? Again, it depends a lot on construction, but in most cases, a little extra speed at mid ranges is a good thing.

For what bullet weights are you comparing? 130 vs 150? The 270 books out just under 3200 with a 150, the 7mm has no problem getting that or better.

I think the 270's strong selling point is the excellent ballistics it offers in 22-24" barrels. Makes for a great flat shooting rifle that's easy to carry and won't kick your *** with each squeeze.

That being said, if you're hunting past 800 you should probably be using the 7mm. Coming from a proud 270 WSM supporter...

Yeah, I don't know how hard it is to drive the ablr, but for what it's worth my 7mm would push 162s to 3200. Don't people get around 3050 with the 180s?

I'm running a 180 eld m at 3150. I've ran it up to 3223 but had some sticky bolt lift.

Most data that I've seen indicates the 270 will drive a 150 grain between 31-3200 fps. I get 3220 with Retumbo and about 3180 with 7977. Both ran out of capacity before indicating pressure. I think I need might to drop down to RL19 or 7828 and see if the yield is any better. In an 8 pound rifle, it's not unmanageable but it definitely gets your attention.

I was just going off book values. I know you can push things way harder than what the books say

You're also comparing lawyer-safe book data... The 7mmRM is severely crippled in just about every loading manual, pushing favor to the newer cartridges. Real world numbers, the 7RM is a beast.

I'm getting over 3100 MV from my 26" 7RM with a Berger 168...

I hear yha. I was running 45.2 gr of Varget for the 178 gr Boolitz from a factory 308 with small signs of flat primers...

Roughly 1 ish grain over spec,,, a little bit more powder charge in the winter months on top of that...

Yes,,, the brass shows up expanded when running the sizing die,,, nothing to worry about there since I benefit form a accurate load and something that will reach out there...

Yuppers,,, each rifle is different,,, I had another rifle that did not like hot loads,,, it went to a new home...

Just loaded up dads new 7RM with Berger 180's and finished at 2980 out of a 26", this load is 2 grains under any pressure and virgin brass. Velocity plateaued and there wasn't much left to achieve. We were fireforming while shooting between 740-1306 yards. At 7000' elevation this load will be at 1800 fps at 1380 yards. Some real world numbers for ya.
