been looking at another rifle build. Thinking it will be a 300 mag. Was considering 300 Win, but after watching a YouTube video on the 300 PRC and was particularly taken by the supposed flexibility it offers. Being able to handle 225-230 gr bullet for LR targets and 180-212gr for hunting.

This brings into question what barrel twist and will it handle this range of bullets.

Thanks in anticipation.

Look at the twist recommendation for the specific bullet you have in mind for full stabilization, then got at least a half turn if not a full turn faster so that when the next longer, heavier, higher BC bullet comes out and you want to try it you'll have enough twist to handle it.

The 30 PRC is interesting but I'd stick with the .300wm or .300 RUM rather than build one now. Being the first or one of the earliest to jump on a fad tends to get really expensive and more often than not ends up disappointing.

You don't want to be stuck with just one source of brass either.

That is solid advice right there. For anything over 230 I wouldn't worry about it as far as heavier bullet down the road, the B.C wont make up for the velocity drop. A 1-9 will do anything you want in a 30 cal.

Screenshot_20190208-063158_Chrome.jpg This is a good read if you just wanna change calibers, from a pure accuracy stand point these 2 guys know what there talking about.

The military is using an 8tw and the sammi print is 8.5 for the PRC. I shoot at sea level so I'm going with an 8 as I also shoot mostly in the winter. If your out west a 9 is fine. If your shooting really long ELR stuff the tighter twist helps get the bullet through the trans sonic region much better.

I suggest you look closely at the new Hornady 300 PRC. Hornady saw the design/performance drawbacks of the .300 win mag, 300 Norma mag, 30 Nosler and others then designed the 30 PRC cartridge to overcome these problems.

The problems ranged from the difficulties in head spacing a belted magnum to the too short necks of most of the .30 magnums making it hard to accommodate long bullets, to the "overbore" of huge cartridge case capacity (like the 300 RUM) resulting in powder still burning in the throat of the barrel.

The US Army is now testing the 300 PRC for use in their sniper rifles. There are testing it in a special run of Barrett MRAD rifles. As well Hornady is making a special run of Army designated cartridges for this test. If adopted the 300 PRC would replace the .300 Win mag in current use.

Tell me more about the design and performance drawbacks of the 300 Norma?

Out of the ones mentioned above the 300 WM is .285 neck length the rest are all .310-325. The only design that the 300 PRC has an advantage is saami spec freebore for the heavies and if you shoot factory rounds. If you need a reamer just spec .225 freebore and your in the ball park may be a little long for the WM because of shorter neck. Just about all of them are gonna need a 3.7 mag box length or longer to take advantage of its potential. Reamer spec'd right and good brass the Norma, Rum and Nosler will out run the others.

Forgive me...I am not criticizing you...I am thinking critically about "marketing" as a general rule....How is it that we are not even aware of "design/performance drawbacks"....UNTIL a manufacturer rolls out a "new and improved" round?;):D

There isn't an action that fits it properly. There isn't anything wrong with it's performance.

There's plenty of options for actions that fit it properly . Defiance, ARC , Badger Ordinance , Accuracy International, Desert Tech, Montana , Weatherby, Stiller , Lone Peak , Crux and others I can't remember at the moment.

Just because Remington isn't ideal doesn't mean no other actions exist .

There are companies that make 1 action size for all of the long/mid-size/short cartridges....Like Tikka.

I disagree.
