x50 really better than x40?

I can pick up a new VXlll 6.5x20x40 at a blow out price.

I would be mounting it on a long range big game rifle
after being sent to Leupold for M1's.

At dawn or dusk I was really curious if x50 can make a difference
at 500 plus yards for evening or early morning shots over x40?

And at higher X's does the x50 make a difference?

Appreciate the feed back.

That's exactly where a bigger objective makes a difference. At 20x you're looing at the difference between a 2mm and 2.5mm exit pupil. If the light is good you won't notice much difference, but if it's getting dark (ie after sunset) things get dark quickly. I'm not sure how much difference you'll see (I haven't squinted through x40 andx50 scopes in the fading light) but I imagine there'll be a slight difference.

That said, if the x40 is a deal I'd buy it in a minute. If in the end it makes a big difference having the smaller objective, sell it and get the x50. You won't be out as much, if any.

depends on the price...

the lower profile of the 40obj is more appropriate on some setups... and saves weight, but if neither of these matter, you'll prefer the 50obj or even bigger...

probably a good price on a good scope... but not a "steal"... I would pass at that price... unless you really needed it right away... always a difficult decision though...

VXIII or VX3? If it's the older one it's still a nice optic and a good price, but I would pass and go for the new VX3 with a 50MM. Long range success is a combination of a many little things coming together, the extra 20% of obj is one of those little things.
