Wyoming DIY Non-Resident

Fellas,

I'm looking for some advice on how to get started hunting Mule deer in Wyoming..How do some of you do your research for the places/region you would like to hunt? Where do I start to find information on public hunting areas. I only have 1 perference point, but I would like to start planning on a specific region. How can I find information on a region that would fit my needs? Terrian, quality of deer, and accessability?

Best place to start with is Wyoming game and fish website. Most seasons are early in September the big bucks are usually high and in bachelor groups. Most high places are wilderness areas. You will need a guide to hunt these areas to be legal in the state. Preference points will be a great help good physical shape will also help. Hope this gets you some idea of how to start.gun)

As said above the Wyoming Fish and Game website will have a lot of info and maps pertaining to public land and wilderness as will all western states but:

Having to hire a outfitter when you are a non resident to hunt Wyoming's wilderness is just crap so in my opinion there are better states when on a tight budget and are looking for big mule deer. If someone is telling you about a spot guaranteed its hunted out. Now you did not say what you were after other then mule deer. If you just want a mule deer buck size unimportant then almost any hunt unit in Wyoming would do with time spent.

If you are wanting trophy type animals the first place you should look is in the Boone and Crocket listing and see where the gene pools are in your chosen state figure out where the bucks will be the time of year you will be hunting and if it is high country in any western state know the main migration route of the heard you will be hunting encase of early snow so you can find them. For instance in the Salt River Range in Wyoming the deer are right on top but began to move with the first skiff of snow. That migration is south and well over a hundred miles in length depending on the amount of snow.

Once you pin down an area get a hold of the state biologist who is familiar with the area you have chosen. He or she can supply you with migration routes and summer range where they will be till weather moves them

The farther you get from people the better your odds will be whether it be wearing a backpack or horseback. You don't have to be seeing a lot of deer to take a nice buck you just need to be hunting where they are. Good luck to you.

I'm thinking of just mule deer within the next couple to few years. From the research I have started I think I would like to setup for a unit that can be drawn 3-5 preference points with plenty of public ground and public ground that could be backpacked in for a day hunt and pack back out. Get 5 plus miles in someplace. Thanks for the help guys!
