There are so many high quality scopes out today it is really hard to even discuss it without doing some real narrowing down of options first. Some questions that may help you get started in your search.
1. Do you want First Focal or Second Focal Plane? Don't know what this is? do a search here. Lots of info
2. How much power do you need? Everyone is different regarding this. In general I am careful to give up the low end for lots of high end power because for one I don't need it, and 2, on most but the top tier scopes the optical clarity falls off and the eyebox gets finicky, which I don't like.
3. Are you going to hold over with a reticle or dial?
4. Are you going to range with the reticle or with a rangefinder?
5. How much weight do you want? Some of today's scopes are ridiculously heavy.
6. Do you care about tube size? Larger is heavier and more expensive for mounting systems.
7. Are you willing to buy used? If so you can often times find great deals on what you want or even a step up in quality for the same price.
I agree with what was said here, don't skimp on optics but I also would suggest you don't go all in on one either until you know this is going to be something you stick with and do enough to make it worth the money.
Here are some high quality, middle of the road priced optics to consider.

Bushnell elites, specifically the LRHS line. IF you like FFP scopes the LRHS line is nearly impossible to beat. It has every thing you want or need in the "goodies" department and has glass on par with more expensive scopes.
