Posting for a buddy. He has a $2,500 budget all-in (including optics).
Purpose: Lightweight backpacking rifle for Mule Deer - 500 yds.
He's not very well-versed in LR rifles and doesn't have any interest in shooting an animal beyond 500. Mostly this will be for muleys but he'd like a 7 rm so he can use for elk as well (he's currently killing critters with a factory 300 RUM - wants something lighter and smaller cartridge).
Yes, we have discussed buying a factory rifle, bedding it, quality optics and hope that it shoots. He doesn't want to gamble on something that may or may not shoot.
Post what you have and please include some targets and load info for that target.
