This would not be for the long shooter, I have looking for a compact repeating big game rifle.Nothing out there dazzled me, so I decided to shorten a browning blr/levergun.Shortened the barrel already and now want to shorten the stock/l.o.p.Would like to go to 12.5", I am 6'plus with arms like an ape (face too)Offhand I shoot better with with a short stock, especially in the field.Anybody else?

My favorite deer gun is my 1894 44mag lever gun. Light, fast, and great for hunting brush around the house. My hand loads do a heck of a job. It put two deer in freezer this year. I also rolled a coyote at about 60yds that was trying to get away. He was really moving, but with a little lead the lever gun put him down. Where I live, most of the shots on deer are all within 100yds. That little gun is wonderful.

I have the opposite problem, the only thing I like to be light and fast is a shotgun for quick shots on doves. My factory Model 700 is about an inch too short for me and really wish it fit me better. It would be a heck of a lot more comfortable if it had a 14.5" length of pull compared to the standard LOP. I am about 6'3 and have a 31" draw length with my bow so standard stuff is always a little short for me and unlike you I don't like it haha! :D

We have different requirements, but my point is as with a saddle rifle, short is better, less bulky is too and I find not alot out there commercially to suit my particular needs.Have tried m94, big bore and ruger 1,both are quick .I like them , but need a repeater with box magazine, bolt gun to bulky for me.Might need to rope a steer, and this is grizzly country. These creatures even track up around the house sometimes.Might use it to reach a bighorn ram across a basin. These are my needs. So I tinker cheers.

I use two compact guns, Remington 600 in a 350 rem. mag and a Remington 760 in a 30-06. Both have 18" barrels and are handy in thick areas and are easy to carry. Both would fit your needs, finding a 760 would be easier and cheaper than a 600 or 660. An 06 with a good 200 grain bullet in a 760 would do well.

Thanks for the feedback. The 760 is a pump..is it not? Yeah, I hunt horseback exclusively, and really prefer a narrow forearm and no bolt appendage. How do you like the 18"barrel length? I reduced the Browning lever gun to 19"and might shorten it more yet..but its a 270 win..maybe just a little bit .I know, can't hear anyway.Cheers

The 760 is a pump gun. I really like the 18" barrel for hunting the thicker areas, it is easy to get around, doesn't catch the brush. I use 165 hornady interbonds in mine, they are a tough bullet and they shoot in that gun, and I can push them over 2700 fps, which is still flat enough to shoot over the distances I encounter (under 400 yds). The 760 (7600) have a slim box magazine and with a little reloading work, they will shoot.

A pump is really what I am looking for, never hurts to ask though. What does it weigh and would it fit in a saddle scabbard..We see very few that are not bolt action around here, even lever guns are few.Does that action work in cold temps..is it reliable?

I have an older BLR in .308 that I use occasionally for much the same reasons as you, the only reason I don't use it more is because of the trigger, but I'm saving that for a future project. I agree the 760 would be a good choice given you're requirements, they are slim, light and fast handling, oh, and very reliable. You didn't mention scope or open sights. Have you considered an auto?..... Remington? BAR? I have a friend who has a 280 BAR that is cut down to 18" and LOP has also been shortened("?) scoped , no sights. He use's it as a "truck" gun, maybe a little heavier than you would like but just a thought
Also don't be to quick to dismiss bolt guns, only because the caliber choices and barrel lengths will be greatly increased. just my 2 cents E
