Its o k and maybe even fun for some of us when we fool other people.
However its a bit foolish when the one we attempt to fool is ourselves.
Fact is that if hitting targets at the longer distances was hard to do, very few among us would be able to do it, at least consistently.
Fact also is that still today, 1000 yard matches are held at places like Camp Perry where only cartridges like the 308 and 30/06 are used.
BUT, by and large these arent your average everyday hunter/ shooters.
AND, the rifles and sights/scopes they use arent the type the typical hunter/shooter would use either.
Its also important to note that some of the 1000 yard matches allow for ( coaching ).
For the benefit of those who dont know, a coach is a person who sits behind the shooter, and with the use of a quality spotting scope they inform the shooter where his/her shots are landing.
Coaching is also permitted for the 1000 yard benchrest matches, but only for the sighting sessions prior to the actual match.
For long range hunting and casual shooting at the longer distances coaches can also be used, and are usually referred to as spotters.
When my sons were teenagers they would shoot at rocks on the hillside across from our camp with 22 mags, but only on days with no wind.
They could consistently hit rocks at 400 yards, and fairly consistently out to 6 hundred yards.
Of coarse one would act as a spotter while the other shot.
Likewise i watched my then 13 year old grandson take a Porcupine out of a tree at 900 yards with a factory Savage 308
with a Buckmaster scope set on max 16 power.
He had 2 prior close miss shots.
So if you havent gotten my message by now, its this simple.
It has more to do with how you do it than what you do it with.
At least to a point, and by then you will hopefully realize whats lacking.
A true story involving one of my now many late long range friends.
His name was Donald Miller, better known as Bill Miller.
He and i were glassing for deer across one of the typical wide valleys in N C PA.
After a bit, a traditional woods hunter approached us and struck up a conversation.
What are you guys doing, how far is that, yadda yadda.
When he was ready to leave he said, you know what?
Anybody could do what you guys are doing.
And just that quick Bill responded.
Well almost anybody can, but i will tell you who cant.
Pikers cant, and that eliminates a big percentage of those who might be able to.
Success with anything as a rule requires a commitment, and quite often its a financial one.
