VLD seating depth poll

Been working up a load for my TC Icon Precision Hunter 308 (22 inch barrel) with 168 VLD's (Hunting/Orange box). I was testing all charges with bullets touching the lands and getting sub MOA results with several charges for 3 shots but when i started testing with 5 shot strings only 2 charges were under moa but being a factory rifle it has a deep chamber and wasn't even close to fitting in the mag. I figured what the hell I'll load em in the mag way off the lands (.140) and bingo the **** thing shot the best group yet. .331 for 5 shots at 100 yards. Now to test at longer distances and see what happens. 44gr Varget, Fed 210 match primers, Lapua brass, .140 off lands. 2650 average speed with ES 19

I could not get the 130 vld to fly out of my 264 M70. Seating depth, bullet length, and bullet weight were very inconsistent. Going back to the bullets in the greenbox!

My 308 Milspecs shoot everything better when loaded +.150" out of the lands. Close far and in between distances.

Old profile 6mm 88grn berger match/varmint #24323... light touch to rifling with 3 powder weights shot into low.2's/high.1's
New profile needs 30thou' back to shoot and only one powder weight to shoot into mid/low .2's

7mmRM Tikka T3 168VLD Hunting jammed 0.005"
7mmRM Sendero 180VLD Hunting jammed 0.010"
270Win mod70 EW 140VLD Hunting jammed 0.005"

All averaging less than 0.7 MOA. Actually the sendero averages 0.35 MOA.

Just curious, but how are you guys who are seating beyond .100 measuring your seating depth? I use a sinclair comparator and insert and measure off the ogive and it appears the ogive will disapear in the case if seating beyond .100 off the lans.

they are not using a comparitor, so the measurement is not based on the ogive (where, maybe it should be)

they're talking about the measurement they get from OAL with a caliper. there will be about 3 one-thousandths variation between each bullet length with bergers.

338edge - 300otm -0.010 in land
7 rm -190 matrix vls - 0.015 in land
7 rm -168 vld - 0.010 in land
223 rm - 64 fb vld - 0.010 in land
Groups from 0.25- 3/8 in

I start seating them in land with good groups and is no sense to chase groups.
Ifrom now on i enjoy busting rocks and prepare for hunting
If your main purpose is competitive match - then yes you have to get the tigjter group possible

Ok I wanted to share some results of the berger sorting technique video I posted: Let me give you the finer details first.

Rifle; Custom built .284 Win, Defiance Action, Schneider 28" 3 taper fluted 1:9 twist, reamed for neck turned necked up Lapua brass, Jewell Trigger 1.5 lb, Grey Bull bedded stock., Near base and Rings, GreyBull/ Leupold scope, PTG bottom metal.

Load: necked turned Lapua brass. .001 neck tension, Wolf Large primers, 51.4 gr R17, Berger 180 VLD hunting bullets sorted by seating depth. I am getting 2848 fps. In the video I mention that my rifle like them seated .010 in the lands. I subsequently discovered that it actually much prefers then .010 off the lands:

Here is the results: Target is a 50 yard target 1/2" rings. The 6 round group was taken at 302 yards. This makes my rifle approx. 1/4 MOA accuracy

Again here is the sorting technique;

CONSISTENT BULLET DEPTH SEATING - YouTube

You have to measure the wider side of the group. (not the narrow one)

Im loading
7mm 168 vld in two 7mm RMs
.270win 140gr vld
.308 168gr vldh 175vldt 185vldh in two .308 win. 30.06 and 300 win mag.

I have ran the seating depth test from
.120 to .020 jam multiple times per rifle. Every one of them shoots .025 jump the best.

I can not figure how people are getting good results from .100 + jump! I think they have to be especially sensitive to run out because of the drastic bearing surface transition but can't see how jumping them would negate run out.

.243 win, Berger 95 grain VLD hunting, 0.020" off lands, 0.25" groups @ 100 (Weatherby Vanguard)

7mm RM, Berger 168 gr VLD, 0.020" off lands seemed to be the best

Found that the seating "window" is much tighter than Berger's reloading manual states. Instead of 0.020" window it's more like 0.005" Translation, lots of money spent on trying to optimize seating. That is the cost of shooting the VLD's I guess.
