Tripod?

Is it worth stepping up to an ARCA style tripod and mount over something like a hog saddle? I've got the clamp style tripod for my son, but I'm wondering if I would be better served in my own long range shooting with the other style. What experience can you guys share?

I had been watching your post hoping some folks would chime in as I've had a similar question for a long time. I've been wanting a hunting tripod for a couple of years. Finally just pulled the trigger on a nice carbon fiber tripod that came with a ball head and ARCA mount, and separately added a very lightweight ARCA compatible tac plate/bag combo. Wish I would have done this a couple of years ago! The stability off the bag is a big improvement over my Primos trigger stick and backpack.

Since most of my rifles have stocks not conducive to easily adding an ARCA rail, thought I would mostly need to use a hog saddle type mount. This review by MDT between ARCA/bag/saddle tripod setups really opened my eyes.

What Is The Best Tripod Attachment For Hunting?

The tac plate/bag combo I purchased was from LS Wild and weighs just 7.1oz. It's filled with Spexlite. Had been looking for that material as it doesn't seem to deteriorate if it gets wet. The steadiness/squishiness is better than expected. Can't wait to use the tripod on the elk hunt this fall.

Did you end up getting a new tripod setup? If so, how do you like it?

There are lots of Posts on tripods. We use the Vortex Carbon Radial Ball Head with the BOG "Death Grip". Also have a New In The Box Vortex Carbon Radial Ball Head Tripod for sale if interested.

Having used a Pig Saddle and then switching to a ARCA rail, I like the ARCA rail better. I can pick up the setup and move it around without fear of the rifle falling out of the clamp style rest.

Last PD season, I also started using the same setup as shown above by IdahoMtns. This is also a very stable platform to shoot from. I found you don't want to leave it unattended with the rifle sitting on top as it could roll off.

I've run them all for hunting ARCA, pig saddle, and pic rail. Ill never go back from Arca my second favorite was pic rail when i had a Manfrotto and a Larue head. I mainly pig and deer hunt so i need quick follow up shots with pigs. I feel like the pig style saddle is great at dear hunting or in a blind.
