Thompson Contender 30-30

First post!! I have a Thompson Contender with a 12" barrel and a factory "Muzzle Tamer". With todays variety of powders and the ability to use pointed bullets has anyone gotten some respectable accuracy at 50-100 yard range?

Several years ago I had 2 10 inch 30/30 barrels. one of them was very accurate but the other wasn't nearly as good. I was using 150 grain Speer or Hornady bullets shooting at metal silhouette targets out to a maximum range of 200 meters.

My barrel is a super 14 30-40 Ackley improved. Accuracy is amazing.

Here is my 30-30AI set up for hunting. I've just not hunted much at all in recent yrs. If you are well practiced you can get a fair amount of range out of it.

Currently, I'm running the 125 NBT and NAB in my 14" Contender, and in the 22" Contender 30-30, its either those or the 150 NBT. All shoot very well, but the 125 NAB in the 14" 30-30AI shoots extremely well using either 4198 or 4895.

h322 and 135 Sierra ssp bullets or 2015 br with 125 tnt is what we used to use in out contender pistols. The Speer tnt in a 14" pipe with a 4x Leupy on top would always be sub moa. the 135 Sierra was a good hunting pill, but is a dodo bird. I'd think of the 125 Ballistic tip... We had used 375 win brass necked down at times but regular 30-30 brass seemed fine as long as long as you didn't abuse it.

I shot this goat at about 150 yards with my 10" 30-30 and 125 gr NBTs. I have hit clay pigeons at 300 yards with it (not every time).

I have been thinking about a 10in barrel here lately if I come across one I think I'm gonna have to pick one up. This post just pushes me a little more that direction. I'm not the only one thinking about the old 30-30.

I have found the 30-30 in a Contender to be very versatile, for it is easy to load heavy, light, varmint, lead cast, etc. With proper bullets, it is sufficiently fast and flat enough to do most pistol hunting out to 250-300yds, and with the correct bullets, it will even take elk at decent ranges.

That was a 2x made in Japan Tasco. I have a 2-6x Bushnell on it now (and swapped grips).

I own a couple of the older Japan made Tasco pistol scopes, and so far, they have been very good scopes.
