Killed this bull last Monday (11/11) on the LK Ranch in Meeker, CO (free range). Cold day with multiple snow flurries, which caused the wind to change directions 2 times. To avoid being busted, we stopped our stock 2 times to reposition. The third stock was the charm.......we hiked over a mile to get within 200 yrds. Bull was in a herd of over 100 elk and there were 2 other 5x5+ bulls in the herd. While trying to determine the largest bull in the herd, we got busted by 10+ cows and spikes, but they never sounded the alarm. The big bulls never saw, smelt, or heard us. After about 90 seconds (seemed like forever), I was able to locate the alpha male, and shot him while lying down with my Rem 700 300WM w/ Zeiss HD5 Scope (Z600 reticle) w/ 180 gr. Barnes TTSX bullet.....right through both lungs. He never got up and expired within 30 seconds.

LK Ranch is a special place......did a bunch of research prior to pulling the trigger on this hunt. Property (14k acres), lodge, guide, food, land management, ownership.....all were top notch. They won the Ranching for Wildlife award in Colorado in 2012 for a reason. I saw over 500 elk while there in 3 days, with more than 40 bulls/spikes. I counted over 15 water tanks on the property, so that means there were probably 2 - 3x that amount I didn't see.

I highly recommend this property/hunt for anyone looking for a quality Elk hunt for a reasonable price.......the last 3 years (since new Guide took over) they have recorded a 100% success rate on 5x5 or better bulls.

Excellent Bull! Sounds like your research paid off. I recognized you from the BD page, you used to pop up there pretty frequently when things were firing down south.
Congrats again on a great hunt!

If any one is looking for a quality bull ELK hunt in 2015 on this 14,000 acre ranch (fair chase), shoot me a PM and I'd be happy to provide more info and the head guide's phone number. Very reasonably priced and there are a number of benefits to hunting on a ranch that has the "Ranching for Wildlife" designation (vs. non designated private land). I am likely going back this year if I don't draw a public tag in NM.

Great looking bull! I would be really interested in more info on hunting this ranch. I checked out their site, but it didn't really provide much info besides the price of the tags. I have hunted units 12 and 24 the last few years but have only taken cows. It's time for me to put a nice bull under my belt and this sounds like a great place to try.

Thanks in advance,

Jay
