Sticky B & C stock

I have a B & C Medalist stock with the discontinued rubber coating that has deteriorated from just being tacky to now being sticky. B & C can refinish it in their urethane finish at a reasonable price ($63.00), but I would like to just clean it up and keep using it.

Does anybody know how to get the sticky surface off without damaging the stock?
