Ordering a 338 rum tomorrow and need an optic. Rifle is about 7.5 lbs. Primary use is black bear in PA and and elk out west. Maybe moose or caribou one day. Budget is less than 1k. Ideally $6-800 would be whatI I want to spend. I have it narrowed down to the 3-15x44 vx-5hd with wind plex or the fire dot. The other scope I have been looking at is the burris veracity 3-15.
any others I should look at?
What would you put on it?
thanks,
matt

Is the total budget, rifle and optic, $1000?

I recently got the Athlon ares in 2.5-15x50mm and really really like it. Way nicer than my vortex HST and it's the same price. If you want a hunting rectical in second focal plane they make the Midas for about 100 less.

Nikon monarch is a nice scope, vortex (HS, HST, PST) work well, and of course the nightforce SHV will suit you well.

The shv just doesn't do it for me. I like the idea of locking elevation turret the on the vx5. I want to be able to dial elevation but it either be a tall capped or locking turret. Weight is also a priority.

The monarchs were on my list but I had heard they do not do well in low light. Can anyone verify this?

Nikons glass is always great. Even in low light. I had a 5x20x44mm monarch and loved it for hunting. Guys on the forum don't like Nikon bc the majority of their models don't have a ton of features suited for long range shooting. No zero stop, no 30 mm tube, no illuminated retical....

There's also the Nikon black scopes out. They are $600-$700. Have a lot of the long range features, but are still second focal plane.

Thanks. I really had to take a second look at the nikons again though. I gave my dad one of mine and still have an old monarch on a 300 win mag that have been pretty great.

no one asked and just started throwing scopes out. Whats your experience with optics? you dial turrets? use the reticle for hold over? How far out are you willing to take game? 400 in 400 out? .300 rum will get out there if you let it. Just depends on you...you have the cartridge...now to best help out with suggestions i think your application needs to be detailed out a little more...

I already ordered the vx5.
I do tend to dial elevation and hold wind. I practice out to 600 with all of my center fire rifles so until I can stretch them out farther, that's where I make my cut off. It really depends on the wind how far I will shoot at an animal. If the wind is swirling and gusting unpredictability, I may not shoot past 300.
My dad has a 300 rum so I know what it will do. I also have a 300 win mag so I wanted something bigger bore.
