I am working on a Schneider barrel and have been working the surface of the stainless barrel to match the matte surface of the factory stainless action. I think I have a close match on the blasting media finally so the texture is close. The issue is the coloration. My blasted surface is not matching the action. The factory action looks like it might have a slight coloration and possibly a coating. Does anyone know?

I going to suggest maybe the grade of stainless is not the same.

Looks like Savage use 416 Stainless and Schneider use 416R which going by data sheets have different compositions and therefore could be a different colour.

Have you tried contacting Savage?

No sir. Sometimes answers are easily found here first.

Decided to blast the bottom side of the recoil lug for a test. It looks exactly like the barrel and barrel nut. The barrel nut was polished due to a scratch so I had to blast it. If you notice in the pictures the smooth nut looks just like the new barrel.

Conclusion is that the factory stainless has some sort of coating. Cerkote makes a clear matte finish that might be the way to go. I will look and see if they offer a stainless color. I am not super stoked about blasting my action but it might be the only option to make the whole thing match.

Looked on Cerakote site and noticed they sell Savage Stainless. I ordered it and 4 other swatches. On my way to finishing this rifle. Etchin these patterns I drew into it. I shrunk the antlers to a smaller size, right side, in case the larger pattern won't fit. Hope it turns out nice.

Sooooo I think I have solved the dilemma. Savage used some sort of coating or paint. I have gone forward with blasting the action etc to match the barrel and the used spray on silicone as a protectant. So far it has turned out exactly like I wanted.
This pix shows difference in unfinished action compared to treated barrel.
