Remington 700 Mountain SS a good starter rifle?

One of these just popped up for a decent price at my local gun shop.

.30-06, no scope/rings/bases, just the rifle itself. Doesn't look to have many rounds through it. Not perfect but very nice and under $800 out the door. Would this be a decent caliber/rifle to get my feet wet in this game?

I see lots of people suggesting Savage so I'm considering that as well but locally it seems the new Savages in stock are all tactical type models and the used Savages look beat up and not taken care of.

I also see TIkka is gaining some traction here, would that be a good starting point? This same gun shop stocks new Tikka's but only the basic blued and stainless models, no heavy barreled stuff.

I'll add one more that's a little out of reach for me but I may be able to trade something to acquire it if it's worth it. "Used" but unfired 5R MilSpec .308 Remington 700 for $995.00.

I would definitely get a Remington. The only problem with the Mountain Rifle is that its barrel is only 22". A 24" barrel is nice for an '06 because of the added velocity but the 22" barrel will work. Remingtons are deadly accurate and when loaded up right, the .30-06 will kill elk at 600yds easily. So get the Remington Mountain Rifle and get good with it.

The mountain rifle barrels are also a bit thin/light as well as short. $800 is also way too much for a used one. I am a Remington man also but for the money a Savage is a really good one. Best way to go is to get a used Savage and screw you a custom barrel on it in your caliber of choice. You can do it yourself with a nut wrench, vice with wooden blocks to hold the action in and a go head space gauge. Check out some of the big box stores like Dick's for a new lower priced Remington 700 if you want a Remington.

Well guys to be honest I went a whole different route and bought this....

It's a new model I guess, Remington 700 Long Range .25-06 with the B&C M40 stock. I know it's basically a Varmint model in a nicer stock but it feels awesome. I put a cheap bipod on for now and picked up a Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x40 Side Focus with NP reticle. I also picked up a 1 piece Leupold mount and Leupold rings.

We'll call this my beginner rig to learn on. I've got less than $900 into it so if nothing else I've got a fun new toy for the range.

Ive allways had good luck with remingtons. Yes you can get a bad one but you can get a bad anything. One of the better shooting remingtons I ever owned was a 280 mountain rifle. It was one of the first mountain rifles off the line when they first came out. It had exceptional wood and shot about everything sub moa and that thing had about the thinnest barrel ive ever seen on a rifle. Like a fool i let it slip away. Wish it was back here right now.

Yes! Another Remington owner. Congrats on your new Long Range Model 700. Those things look sweet! Would really like to try one out one of these days.

I have done a lot of reading here and wanted to try Savage or Tikka along with a few other brands but the only rifles that felt as nice happened to be well above my price range. A $500 Savage might have a nice action and barrel but the stocks felt cheap. This 700 just felt right, nice stock, heavy barrel, etc.

The odd caliber scared me off for a couple days but I figured if I hang out here with you guys long enough I'll have this thing re barrelled to .338 Edge by the summer after I get bored with buying factory ammo for the current chambering.

Anyone know of any ranges in New Hampshire longer than 100 yards? LOL

That's what makes Remington the best haha. They're comfortable, accurate, and affordable. Good luck with your new long range rig!

You made a wise choice. For deer size game the 25-06 is deadly. I have killed 100+ deer with the 25-06. I like varmint barrel Remingtons.
