Personally here in the west I've found that ranging over the animal has too many variables, I will try the idea of resting on the bolt.
For me what I've found best is to range the ground at or as close to the feet of the animal as possible.
Actually hitting the animal has proven to be pretty much impossible unless they're very close (think archery ranges)

((length or height of target) * 1000) / mili radians spanning target = range in meters
Range finders are nice except in real cold weather and need reflective targets. Try to find large reflective deers (white albino deers). Getting a laser return on a big light colored object like boulder near target helps.
