does a brake take some velocity out of the bullet?
Going to follow fiftys advice and go with holland on 300 rum

You won't see any velocity drop. All it does is redirect the gasses AFTER they have left the muzzle. They have already done all they can to the bullet.

SWEEEEEEEETT! thanks Bill I was reading somwhere and somebody said they drop the velocity

Only time you will get velocity drop is if the barrel is ported which in effect shortens the effective length of your barrel and in my opinion, a very poor way to reduce recoil. The Holland is one of the best out there for reducing recoil. You will be happy, your 300 RUM will recoil about like a 25-06 at the most.
