Just wondering what primers you all are using and for what.

Reason that I ask is I have been working on a load for a 270wsm. The load that I am currently working with is Norma cases(New) that haven't gone through this rifle yet, Retumbo 68gr., Matrix 165 and Federal 215(since I can't get my hands on 215m).

Visual inspection of the primers tells me that they are inconsistent and when Chrono graphing I can get velocities with in 10-12 fps than I'll get one that is 100 fps less than the those. Forgive me I don't have the actual numbers in front of me but this is the just of what I am seeing.

I am going to try some cci 250 just see if I see better consistency. That being said I am considering trying some BR2 or maybe some WLR??

I use F210M in a 300 WSM. A lot of shooters use non mag primers in WSM cases. This is due to the shorter more compact powder column. Not sure that will fix your 100 FPS odd ball but you may find the non mag primers give you better ES and accuracy.

Also shooters use faster powders in WSMs. I use H4350 and RL17 in my 300 WSM with 180 to 210 Gr bullets. Works great

Interesting, I'll try some Federal 210 as well and see what I get.

I know we're talking about two different Caliber's but what velocities are you seeing with the 4350? And what is your barrel length?

In my reading here-it seems kinda split as far as the powders go? Some use the faster powders and others use the slower.

100fps seems extreme for a primer to cause?

I recently switched a from 215 to br2 just to see if it made a difference. and
It took a 1 1/2MOA group to a 1/2 MOA with just primer change. I think they would be worth a try in your case.

Thanks for the reply "barrelnut"

You as well "plinker", might have been 90fps(going on lousy memory from two weeks ago)! It seemed extreme to me as well, but I weight each and every charge.
I just know that I did notice that when primers were laying in the tray they did not look cosistent

Like I said I think I will give the cci250 and fed210's a try than maybe order some br2's if I don't like what the others do.

Thanks again

My M16 Savage 270wsm liked cci250 with 150vld and RL26, but BR2 primers give my slightly better precision with half the ES.
Velocity only decreased 30 fps with the same powder charge.

Another engineer died in 1995. His girl friend sold his reloading stuff to a second engineer for $1200.
That guy never took up reloading like he planned. Those boxes full of stuff sat on his garage floor until 2007 when he had to leave town fast for a new job. He gave all that stuff to me.

So I am trying to use up 20 year old Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primers.
They seem to work with 7mmRemMag and 6.5-06 with stick powders.

Again, thank you for all the replies. I have some CCI250 and some Fed 210.
I have tried the CCI250 in my 280 Ackley and If I remember right I think I saw slightly tighter groups. I will give them both a shot in the 270 tomorrow.gun)

I have loaded 270WSM for a number of years and have always used mag primers, and most of the time I have used WLRM.

When it comes to extreme spread there is more than just the primers to consider.
Example: I went back and reviewed some shooting with my 270WSM, Winchester Model 70, Bartlein barrel, Timney trigger. I worked up a load using RP cases,140 Hornady BTSP bullets, N165 powder with the same COL of 2.760. The numbers were taken from my CED Chronograph.

#1 load 63.0 grains of N165, 3 shots, average velocity, 2990, ES, 17 ft/sec

#2 load 64.0 grains of N165, 4 shots, average velocity 3040 ES 13.0 ft/sec

#3 load 65.0 grains of N165, 3 shots , average velocity 3070 ES 4.0 ft/sec

As you can see the ES kept coming down as I increased the powder charge even though I was using the same primer.

On the same day I also worked up a different load using 140 Nosler Accubonds and IMR-7828SC powder, in Norma cases, and again WLRM primers. On this load I started at 62.0 grains and worked up to 64.5 grains. My extreme spread started at 40ft/sec and dropped to only 6 ft/'sec at 64.0 grains. At 64.5 it suddenly jumped to 49 ft/sec. As you can see the ES changed with a different powder charge without a change in the primer.

Try 'em all.

Yesterday I fired four groups with four primers in a round robin manner. CCI 200, CCI BR-2, Federal 210, and Winchester WLR in a Kimber 84M .308. The Sierra TMK 155 was powered by IMR3031 @ 44.0 grains. The groups were 1 5/8", 1 11/16", 13/16" and 7/8" respectively. In addition to the 210 producing the best group it also gave the highest velocity and the smallest extreme spread.

Well I went ahead and loaded up 5 rounds each(CCI 250, Fed 210 and Fed 215) and fired them round robin style in three shot strings making sure not to fire any one first every string. Keep in mind that the brass is on its first firing and the nut behind the rifle is no expert:D The data does lead me in a direction though. These are 100yd groups fired prone off a bipod and rear bag. I am new to shooting prone but figure that it is the best field position possible and need to practice that position-this is a hunting rifle.

I think I know the answer but what should my next step be since the es's and sd's are not the greatest
