So here is question to members , how many US hunters want mostly trophies compared to just hunting?

Back ground to the nature of the question:

If this African hunter was to go hunt in the USA I would not really care about the trophy, but rather the experience around hunt. The location, people and cabin talk.
(Not that I say one should go juvenile)

I am not a trophy hunter, but all my hunts are trophies.

I don't know if you'll ever answer that question completely because it's an individual thing. Sometimes, like the last day of the season, I'll take a non-trophy buck, which was once a trophy hunt, but now becomes a meat hunt.

I also do meat hunts (antlerless).

I do not care about the meat because my wife does not like it. the turn off on meat is the processing of it, out butcher shop here the only one will take 5-6 months to do it and the cost is around 225.00 and they mix the meat for burger with everyone else meat and do not trim the fat off well and you get that tallow taste and greasy film in your mouth

You need to find a better processor/butcher or do it yourself.

It was tough when I first started hunting deer were few and far between, so it was the first buck you may never see another all season. Now I have as much time as seasons allow me, so I can pick and choose. Still need as many as allowed, I only eat wild game.
Going to Africa is very diffrent for me, I want a good repesentive animal to harvest, know all meat will be used and some to eat as part of the enjoyment of the hunt.

Typically, here in the US if we pay to hunt we want a nice trophy. Because public land is accessible and we like to hunt, and we have so many deer, a lot of hunting is for the table not the trophy, but no one passes up a big set of antlers. I'm like many hunters and don't like the strong taste of venison, but elk and bison are delicious and so is small game like rabbit and squirrel. I'd try everything I shot in Africa (within reason), but no foreigner goes hunting in Africa for the meat.

Hunting in Africa is, at minimum, a $15K bill for us, so wanting trophies as keepsakes to bring back memories is important to us. We'll have a meal or two from an African animal, maybe, but we'll like at those horns or hides for decades and remember the stalk and the shot.

If I may ask how will the $15k breakdown look like? Airfare is about $2k....

Yes, you can do a hunt for $8K or so, but it's a quick in-and-out. If I want lion and buffalo along with plains game, and don't want to do it all in 5 days, don't want to get off a plane in Africa and immediately get on a small plane, it's going to cost more. How often do you get the chance to go to Africa? And, there's the trophy fees.

This may be an age thing. In my 40s I could fly economy across the Pacific. Not today. Heck, I'd look for an Emirates flight so I could spend a day in Dubai each way, recovering!
