I am trying to decide on what caliber I should get next. The end use will be for deer, antelope and coyote size animals. I hunt in Minnesota, Missouri, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. The current calibers I own for this purpose are 300 win mag, 30-06 and 45-70 for heavy wooded areas. I am currently having a 338 rum built - however that is more for Elk and some bean field deer hunting in Missouri.
The calibers I am considering are - 270wsm, 7mm rum and 300wsm. Any thoughts on those calibers or suggestions of any others? I reload so would be open to wild cats. Have not decided yet if I will have a gun built or by a factory gun.
Also - please don't tell me the 30-06 and the 300win mag will work. I know that - there is just an empty spot in my safe yearning to be filled with something new and different.

I vote for something in the 6.5mm. I like the 6.5-06, easy wildcat to load for, performs on the high end.

I did some checking on the 6.5-06. Looks like a viable option.
Anyone have experience with the 257 Weatherby magnum?

Yes, my wife and I are blessed. I will pass on the message ... he's coming home for spring break this Friday. Thanks.
