New Swaro Scope Windage Issue

I am aware. I don't know the answer to this question. But shouldn't most high end scopes if mounted straight be close to the middle on the windage or is this common? Is it possible the reticle is not positioned optically in the middel of the windage adjustments ? I am not expert on these issues so looking for thoughts? Thanks.
There's my age old question and one I have always asked myself when mounting scopes...and I have mounted 100's. And the answer (although still a mystery) remains a definite NO ...they are not. .but why not!
I'd try new rings first since you had another scope on the existing bases...just me
 
I am in the processs of finalizing setup for 270 Weatherby with a Lone Peak action without a rail. We mounted a new Z8i Swaro with Talley One Piece. It looked perfect but after having the gunsmith, who built the gun, and is loading ammo for it it ran out of windage and he could not zero it with the setup. We are going to run thru the scope setup and replace the rings with a rail but just curious to see if anyone had any thoughts? There was a previous NX8 on the scope and was able to break it in and sight it in but moved some scopes around and put the NX8 on a 6.5 PRC. It may be the scope but I would think that would be unusual? Thanks
What are your rings torqued to? If I remember correctly, my Z3 needed to be at 14 in/lbs or it would bind the inside parts. I was having similar issues and the scope not moving for windage. I had it torqued to 18 in/lbs. I wouldn't have believed it if it didn't happen to me. I reset the rings to 14 in/lbs and it's been fine ever since.

Same on my x5, then had the scope sliding around under recoil.
 
Swarovski scope are designed for a max of 18 in/lbs.

Another option that I had to do to a Swaro once was to tap it. I didn't have enough windage for some reason so I just used a rubber mallet to tap on it with a good thump and suddenly everything started tracking again for me. You shouldn't have to do that to a scope that expensive, but in that one case it worked for me.

That's what I was looking for. Couldn't remember exactly the numbers but remember them being lower than others. Talley lightweight aluminum rings are 15-17 in/lbs per their website.


For the Talley Lightweight Alloy Mounts 15-17 in-lb for the cap screws.
 
swaro will tell you 17.7 in/lbs in their in house training program, mounted hundreds of swaros on rifles ranging from high end customs and high dollar European safari rifles to old winchesters and Remingtons.
the 1" models have very limited windage and as the mag increases the windage adjustments get smaller (look up a 5-25 z5)but the 8's aren't going to have a ton more either. dozens of times I ran into a rifle issue that put zero beyond the adjustment range of the scope, one day Winchester finally got their scope holes all in a straight row but it wasn't until the 2000's so I ended up having to check rough scope alignment early in the mounting setup on Winchesters before I had done all the work to level and tighten down completely because it was so common to have an issue. barrels or actions not actually machined correctly putting them slightly crooked, wandering mounting holes, even had some people who had lapped their rings just a little off center and it was enough to mess it all up.



long story short well blueprinted and/or made guns, custom actions and quality mounts were almost always dead nuts on windage when mounted up. not pointing fingers just saying.
 
probably assuming everything is as it was designed, doesn't take much to push it off center either though, burr, chip, bad barrel shoulder or barrel not straight, mounts not installed straight.

point of my diatribe was swaros have very limited windage so are less forgiving of anything being out of spec. count the clicks, walk it across a grid, use a collimator and I'd bet more likely than not the swaro is traveling it's full range, can't think of any I sent back because they didn't move their full advertised travel.

put another known scope on it that you've set to mechanical zero and see how far to the side it throws your rock.

You should be able to grab another turn on the windage by pulling the lock out and grabbing another turn until you're zeroed. If you have the btf turret on, I believe you'll need to take that off until zeroed. Then put it back on. Depending on the z8 you have, the 2-16 has 54 inches of windage according to their site. There is more than one turn of the windage, if that was confusing.
