new range rifle

Looking for suggestions on a new fun gun. Mostly pkinking around d out to say 600 yards.
Ha e a sendero .300 built up already for the big stuff. gun) tikka t3 lite .270 for deer hunting.

Want a pkg under $1200 or so. First think comes to mind is a 700 tactical .308 20" bull with a vortex viper 4-16x50. (Always wanted a short bull barrel)

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I would get some sort of short action 6.5. in 260 Rem, Creedmoor, whatever. Savage makes a great target rifle called a Long Range Precision. Every one who has one seems to like it. Here is mine. Or, should I say my better half's. She loves to shoot it. We shoot it out to 800 yards a lot. Very accurate with Berger 140 VLD's set to the lands. They fit in the mag that way to. All I did was remove it from the HS Precision stock and drop in in a McRee Precision chassis. Scope is Vortex PSI SFP with MOA reticle

Love the thing. Pop rocks all day long at 800 yards. 1/2 MOA too.

I think you're on the right track. The .308 Win has tons of barrel life, and out to 600 is a cakewalk for that caliber.

I think you're definitely on the right road with the 700 SPS Tac 20" .308.

I don't know about the 700 SPS Tac. They come with one of those sticky Hogue stock things that HOWA uses and are only pillar bedded. If you want something more tactical in 308, I would get one of these....

There's a lot to be said for a short stubby barreled practice gun. Mine's a 7-08, scary accurate and easy enough on the shoulder that my 12 & 13 yr old boys enjoy it.

I don't think you could go wrong with any choice based on a 308 case, .243, .260, 7-08, .308 pick one and enjoy.

if you drop below .30 cal bullets get a lot cheaper. I would go to a .284 cal or smaller for plinking.

Or he could buy the 700 SPS and just stick it in a better stock...You can buy stocks on here or Stockys for really cheap. And if it's a sporter channel stock, it's not expensive or hard to open the barrel channel to hold a heavy/varmint barrel. For example: B&C Medalist price vs B&C Medalist Tactical price. You can opne up the barrel channel on a regular Medalist and have a great stock for 1/2 the money.
