Joined after somehow stumbling upon an April 2014 thread on this website about the .35 Newton. I created my own replica of that cartridge in Fall 2012. I wanted the cartridge to achieve 4000 foot-pounds of muzzle energy when propelling a 250-grain bullet; got it at 2684 fps. I get 4092 foot-pounds at a median velocity of 2715 fps; the Standard Deviation for the load in use returned a value of 15.5 fps. That's the muzzle velocity of the five rounds I fired being 99.43% alike; we can look for a very predictable performance when the similarity is that large.
The cartridge required I have a reamer ground, forming dies made, a set of full-length reloading dies made, a set of neck-only dies made and a Factory Crimp Die made. Took a long time; cost a lot of money. The rifle was around $4500 by the time it was fired for the first time in June 2013.
The load to get the 4092 foot-pounds of muzzle energy is 62.0 grains of IMR-4320, the Winchester LRM primer and the Hornady 250-grain SP-RP bullet (p/n 3520). I was getting 3/4" groups (three shots) at 100 yards, but did not know the muzzle velocity. Upped it to 62.0 grains as an experiment to see if I could reach the 2684 fps I wanted. I got it...
I named the cartridge the .358 Sierra Stomper. Just search that name; you'll find several internet references to it. It's a blast to shoot. The recoil is vicious; I've had my fill for the day in ten to twelve rounds. It's the one to the far right in the attached image...
