Hello all , just bought my first AR it's just a low budget 308 but it's a start. I have wanted one for a long time to try and tag multiple coyotes at or near a thousand yards . I used to have fun with our family at the ranch hitting a sewer lid we called the donger at a 1000 yrds. and has been an on going interest. So now I am looking for 308 Dies brass and 175 gr. ballistic tips. If it wasn't illegal in AZ it would be fun to use tracer rounds , ha ha .

Well 308 is a great round to start with, 1k is a pretty long distance for the 308, needless to say your going to learn a lot. What kind of rifle is it? I would consider the RCBS small base X dies and it the only instance I will ever recommend RCBS. Consider the Amax bullet, it cost less.

Thanks for the info, I had a friend pick up a set of sb. dies today . I have a DPMS LR - 308 with a 24 inch bull barrel 1 in 10 twist. When funds allow I will build a 6.5 Creedmore upper with a custom barrel. I was told I should start with a 175 grn. sierra for what I wish to achieve, but the best I could do is 165 sbt's . I believe I will start with Aliant's AR-comp powder, but I don't like how they don't give you a min max range on their reloading chart. Any help is always appreciated. Thank you for your time.

SBT is a great long range hunting bullet for the 308 Winchester! I have never used AR comp, I know so little about it I thought it was only for 5.56 rounds? I use R15 in my M1A its safe for your gun as well. Be careful make sure you know the difference between loading for a gas gun and a bolt gun.

Thanks again for all your help and info. the alliant AR comp literature reads that it was designed for the AR 223, and the 308, and is supposed to be a cleaner I believe slightly hotter powder than the 15. and less ambient sensitive but I was not sure if I could use the 15 in the AR. I am lad to hear that is a option for me because I was concerned about which powders I can use without fouling the gas system since powders are so hard to find right now or at least in the type that I am looking for at the time I will definetly grab some of that when I can find it. I am sure the AR comp will be harder to find right now. It is nice to know there are some folks out there who are willing to give some of their time and pass the experience on to people like me who are just learning. I have never enjoyed learning things the hard way simply because you cant find the right person to ask. As soon as I can get the barrel broke in with some factory bought rounds I will post the progress on finding a load for this rifle. I believe factory rounds would probably give me the best base line to start with but again if you have a better idea I would be glad to hear it. Thanks again. My buddy just picked up some AR comp and he said the new Horandy Manual has it listed. At least for the 55 vmax it was listed for .223. You might be able to find some info there if your using the Hornady bullets anyways.
