I'm new to this and just purchased a browning x bolt in 6.8 western.
Did I make a mistake or will this rifle fit the bill.

Well I listened to a friend and bought the 6.8 to get into long range hunting.Im shopping for a scope now. I'm used to slug guns and 30-30 rifle.What I'm asking is with the right scope is this gun that would suit you or others in this type hunting.

Kind of along the lines of Richard's comment…..long range hunting varies a lot among the members here.

I have set my personal range limit at 600 yards under optimal conditions……is a mere "chip shot" to many on this forum! There are many very knowledgeable folks here that that help you get the most from your equipment.

As my hunting can vary from almost point blank range to the aforementioned 600 yards…..my scope is a 3.5-10 power. I prefer something of lower power on the bottom end…..for those close encounters. If I were buying a new scope today and fairly long shots were on the agenda……I'd be looking at something around 2 or 3 power on the low end up to 12 to 18 or so on the high end! But, that's just me!

Generally, your range limit is only limited by your budget and your skills! memtb

A little more information would be very useful in making an accurate assessment of what you plan to do and how you plan to do it are you shooting coyotes deer, hogs, elk sheep how far do you plan on hunting? How far can you shoot consistently accurate, a lot of questions go into this whole equation, but yes, it's a good rifle and if it Fits you and shoots well, a 175 grain 6.8 bullet should serve you well.

Fortunately money is not an issue.
As for distance if I could be proficient out to 600 I'd be very happy

A 6.8 Western is a great cartridge.
Do you reload, or are you using factory ammo.

Great, have you had a chance to try them and see what your gun likes.
If you can find 170gr Berger's try them.
Your gun should be able to shoot them, I believe it has a 8twt barrel.

Welcome from Colorado. Try the different types of ammo and use what shoots best in your rifle. You should clean your barrel between testing ammo of different types. There is a lot of information here to help with your journey. Enjoy

Rifle aside, what ammo do you intend on running?
I have a 6.5x47 Lapua shooting Lapua Scenar factory ammo it is a .5MoA rifle, rifle is not factory, but the factory ammo is very impressive in this custom hunting rifle rig. It's full custom F-class brother is a little better at .25MoA with the same ammo, 123g Lapua Scenar.

My question above is due to this, if you don't match the ammo to the rifle, your LR experience may be lacking.
I don't see there being a lot of match grade ammo for the 6.8 Western, you may be better off handloading for it.

Hello from north central Arizona, the 6.8 western is a fantastic cartridge capable of taking any north American game or African plains game. For reloading brass was a problem but now that ADG is producing it it takes care of that issue. Look to Choice Ammunition for ammo if you don't handload and enjoy a under appreciated cartridge that hits above it's weight. Throw a nice 3x18 or so scope on it and enjoy!

Welcome from Virginia. 6.8W is a great round for varmints to Elk. Try all that factory ammo to see what your gun likes and report back.
