New 338 RUM

ITs not mine, but I'll get to be messing with a remington xcr in one. My buddy just bought one, along with a vx2, 6-18 target scope, and is going to buy a leica or nikon 800-900 rangefinder. I have been trying to talk him into a 300, but he is a 338 kinda guy. He has been with me on several occasions with my 300 RUM and he knows what there capable of doing. He wants to shoot a 250g bullet, but I told him theres not much for LR in that weight. I told him to go either with a 225g AB, or a 250g SMK. He does not think to highly of SMK's on game, so that ones probly out of the question, but it was a suggestion from me. He also thinks he can get about 3200 with the 225g AB. What are some of you guys using with the 225g AB? WHat about powders and other bullets? I want to help him develop a nice quick accurate load and get to shooting LR!

As you know, the 338 RUM is my favorite rifle caliber.

The 225 gr AB is a great bullet and will hold together, even at RUM velocities up close. I have pics of the 225 gr AB shot into water at 50, 100, 200, and 300 yds that Good Grooper posted for me. I can send them to you if you like.

RL 25 is a great powder. For the 225 gr AB, I am loading 96.0 grs of RL 25, Federal GM215M primer, R-P case.
Best group is .587". Load the bullets as long as the magazine will allow. You should be able to get close to 3200 fps which will make it a LR hammer for elk.

I have been working with my 338RUM with the 225 AB. I have tried IMR 7828 on the fast end and Retumbo on the slow end. I was crunching powder with the Retumbo before I reached max velocity. I asked for some input and Kirby sugggested RL22 (which is very close to 7828 on the burn chart) with the 225AB as ideal for load density and velocity. He suggested that slower powders would be better suited for the heavier bullet weights in the 338RUM.
Hope this helps rem-man. PS I just ordered some 110 AB's for my 25-06 and am anxious to try them out. Should be a good deer killer.

I have had real good luck with RL 22 and the 225 gr PT, 90.5 grs gets me sub .5" groups but not with the 225 gr AB.
RL 25 cut the group size in half in my rifle.

I have loaded for my 338 RUM and is listed in Noslers load book fifth edition, 98gr of RL25 behind a 225gr Nosler bullet. That goes 3227 FPS says Nosler. I have found that the FPS that Nosler gives is a little fast out of my rifle.
