So, I've just purchased (300 win-mag), I'm not inclined to spend a ton of money on a scope, though I'm fully aware that you get what you pay for. What I mean is that I'm not looking to drop $1000 on something with crystal clear glass that will let me make out an animal's teeth at 1,000 yards at dusk. Probably the way to describe what I'm looking for is "good for the money" or "entirely serviceable." 3-9x is probably fine but think I'd prefer 4-12x or something in there. Don't really care about zero stops on the turrets or anything like that, but obviously they'd be nice if the scope is worth it otherwise. $200-400 is probably the right range for me given use cases and relative infrequency of use.

Scopes I'm thinking about:
  • Vortex Diamondback 4-12x x 40mm
  • Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x x 50mm
  • Leupold VX series

I've had good luck with these in the past

Check out Mueller Scopes. We run them on rifles we leave in the ranch trucks and side x sides. They take all of the dirt, dust, getting thrown around (sometimes thrown out), and just keep working, with very clear glass.

If your going the vortex diamondback route atleast get the tactical model with the parallax adjustment and turrets. Sounds like your a second focal plan guy . If your interested in first focal and a decent scope in your $ range I'd probably suggest a Arken scope. General rule my dad always says is if you can't see it you can't shoot it . I tend to spend big on glass and know I can see to shoot on my personal use hunting rifles but run a mixed bag of basic scopes for loaner guns . The 300wm will be much better with a 4x12x40 or 50 than a 3x9 .
Put a ziess 3x9 on my 300wm and thought it needed more so upgraded to a 4x12 . Now I run mostly 5x25x56 and the one 3x15 but it's alpha glass and cost about as much as the custom rifle it's on .

Sightron, has some excellent options that are made in the Philippines. As a long standing supporting vendor here it's always our pleasure to assist the members here. Please feel free to give us a call, 516-217-1000, so we can assist you personally with different available options and special opportunities .

I second the Sightron option. I have the first generation scopes. the "Big Sky" models, back then for the price point the optics were and are just as good as any big name manufacturers of scopes.

I bought 2, Burris 4-20X50 Veracity scopes at Natchez for $499 each. First focal plane, reticle useable/visible 4-20X. 30mm tube, sunshade, zero stop, reasonable size & weight, better than good optics -equal to $1,500 plus Leupold scopes. Price reduced about 40%. Scopes mounted on 6mm AI & 6.5-06, 9.5 pound rifles.

Going up to 34mm tube scopes increases size & weight & cost.

Yesterday at the local range.

Shooting at a IPSC steel target at 400 yards. Another shooter left a nice 2-3 inch group in the center of the white painted target. The top/head portion was untouched so I went for that with wifey's .204R, 40 VMax at 3800 fps, rodent rifle and Sightron 4-20X50 STAC. I could hear hits but could not see them . I adjusted my hold by about a half MOA up and then down, still no visible hits. The next rifle up was the 6.5 CM, 123 ELDM at 2950 and Burris RT 5-25X56. Upon peering thru the RT scope a 3 inch vertical string of tiny .20 bullet splashes could be seen in the top/head of the white painted steel. Some mental adjustment was then needed to go from MOA to MIL and after more hits but louder and more visible.

Both scopes cost about the same amount. If I had to get a new scope for the .204 R it would be a Burris RT 5-25X56 (Euro Optics, $399). The extra 5X power would be useful for shooting pop can size rodents and the RT scope is about the same size, (except for the big 56mm objective) & weight. The FFP scope, RT SCR reticle is an improvement over the RFP scope Sighton 4-20X50. Thinking meters/centimeters vs. yards/inches helps to get into mil adjustments.

I have no plans to shoot deers with the .204 R.
