Do you guys think howling a couple hrs before sunset and getting answers then going back is hurting more than it helps you? Personally I think sometimes it wrecks the area before you ever begin calling, also I locate with howls never had much luck with siren, what's everybody's experiance?

excuse me I ment sunup not sundown

Not sure what you are asking. I know that in the early evening when I can get a group to start yeeping I know that's where they are denning up and then leaving that area for a night of hunting. I can make a set in that area early morning and try to get them coming back from their night out hunting.

I should say I do it from the road in tje dark about 2 hrs before sunup until first light, keep my truck out of sight and almost always get answers, but don't seem to have much luck going back and calling them in, just curious what others thought, I know some guys say it absolutely hurts you

From what I've seen and experienced it does more harm then good . They often come to the howls when they answer then stop talking they are most often coming in to the howls . I use my howls to call them in not locate them I haven't had a lot of luck calling coyote that I have located with a siren . I have had them come in to a siren and if I was too close to them with a siren they may not answer it . My best way of locating them is to track them or let them talk on their own .

thanks, that's kind of what some very successful callers have told me, almost exactly what you said

I think if you are close when you locate, they come by at some point to check it out, and they know they've been fooled. They know that wasn't a coyote howling at them.

I don't mess with trying to locate them. It does more harm than good. I night hint coyotes with thermals, and I've had them come in in 5 min or less on just a few howls. Just go make your set before sun up and start calling as soon as you can see if you want to hunt mornings. I prefer the evening myself. Maybe start calling at sunset and quit calling half hr past sunset. We usually do a set for 40 min and only stay longer if we have coyotes howl back really close.

I have had success locating with other sounds like sirens over howls. I usually try and keep the howls for when they are already lighting up and I can answer them and try to pull them to me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I do a howl locator I like to do it after I have already called that area and sat with distress calls and had no luck.

If I am locating for the plane or helicopter and want to use howls it will be group howls seldom any single coyote howls , I only want to have them answer at that time .
