i seen IMR 4350 is listed as a suitable powder for .284win with heavy bullets, I was wondering if anyone has used it personally and if so how did it perform. I have a can of it and am curious if it's worth giving a shot, or if I should just skip straight to the Hodgdon 4831sc. Any other powders people have had good luck with?

A little history. Back when this cartridge was introduced in 1963 Bob Hutton and others reported excellent performance with 57 or 58 gr of IMR 4350 with a 140 partition with a bolt action rifle. I have used 57 gr of IMR 4350 in several rifles with the 140 partition and the 140 sierra pro hunter with excellent results.

When H4350 became available I switched. It fits in the case better and is less temperature sensitive. Recently I switched again now using RL-17 with a 168 Berger VLD.

I seen that picture you posted on 284 and nice looking rifle. I've got 27" also on my 284. I've shot few Berger 180gr VLD and I used H-4831sc. I build it more to stay with 160gr range of bullets and been hunting with 162gr ELD-X.

If I decided to go heavier I'd use H-4831sc.

I've been back and forth whether to go with the 175eldx or the 180eldm. The thought crossed my mind of running the 162's as well though.

I started out shooting 160gr AB and I tried Berger 168gr VLD and shot good but didn't switch. I shot 162 almost year before deciding to switch.

Lot of good bullets today.

I have 2 284win and one likes H4350 and the other prefers h4831sc. Both 26" and shoot 168 Berger's. CCI br2 primers for both. The one shooting 4350 likes a .120" jump and puts bullets thru the same hole. The other likes only a .020" jump and is 1/4" gun. The 168 Berger is a great hunting bullet, IMO.

i run the .30 cal 155 vld hunting bullets out of my .308 and have considered the 168's for the .284 but they're just so expensive. I know I should stop being cheap but it's difficult sometimes lol.

My very first rifle reloading project was for my Rem 700 in 7mm RemMag with a 3x9 GoldRing. I used IMR-4350 under some 150 Sierras. Shot what I thought was a decent 3 shot group of around 1.25-1.50". I was sure proud of my reloads. After more research, I bought a can of IMR-4831. It opened my mind and offered visual proof that different powder/bullet combos could effect accuracy so. My groups with that rifle/bullet combo literally shrunk in half. That was 1975. I've learned a lot since then. Still learning. Probably aren't keeping up with the ever improving technology, but still learning

I have never shot a 284,but have used IMR 4350 with 140,145 and 160gr bullets in my 280 and had very good success
