Hello, my wife's nephew drew a 2023 middle fork elk tag in unit 20a, wondering if anyone had any type of information on this unit?

Ouch! He picked one of the most remote, rugged units available. Long windy access from the west or Salmon River access from the east. The unit itself is roadless wilderness. Horse pack or fly in gets you deepest. Have a really good plan no matter how you get there.

Hire a guide.
If you don't you will be competing against them. They fly their clients in and while doing so spot the elk from the air, I saw this first had on two different occasions in that area. If you DIY with horses just know that once you get away from the main rivers you can go miles without finding water during a dry year. Lots of bears, lots of mountain lions, and lots of wolves. The elk can be very hard to locate in so much territory, it can get discouraging. Beware of the forest fires, they only put warning signs up at trail heads. When you're in the back country you can literally take a trail and ride right into danger and the fires can cover a vast amount of territory in a short amount of time when the wind gets up. Good luck.

These type hunts are awesome. But they are work and the outfitter may the best bet unless he's Backcountry savvy. Also ....he should start working out now....and pick up a wolf tag..or 2
