Hornady ELD X 45 cal

Bought 3 packs of Hornady's 280gr. ELD X for 45 caliber. I wanted to try these in my Remington 700ML (not the UML). Just for fun, I wanted to see how they fit in the barrel. I thought they were really loose. I am worried that they wouldn't seal up in the barrel. I email Hornady and they said they are suppose to be loose fitting. Is anyone using these bullets in your muzzleloader? If so, what do you think of these and what charge weight are you using? I have converted mine over to use Blackhorn 209 and I weigh my charges.

Really loose can very well be a big problem. If the bullet is loose enough to move off the propellant, you'll have a pipe bomb.

I use the 340ELDX in my 50 cal UML.

With out the base they fit loose.

The base is what makes them work. That and obturation upon firing.

My gun like the 340ELDX well enough to shoot them into a single hole at 100 yds. I've shot them out to 500 yds on steel, and killed 4 deer with them. I use BH209 as well.

Try them. They will work.

Curious how hot you were able to run them if so…. I'm about to try the 280s in a custom 45 cal as well with BH 209.

I haven't been able to try them yet. With work and living on the sun for the past week, I haven't had a chance to try them. I would like to wait until it really cools off.

I do have some suspicions of them. Just for kicks, I ran one down the barrel. It was like there was no friction. Not as tight as I am used too.

The "loose" fit is by design. The bullet is spun up by the red base and also by the bullet obturating in the bore upon firing. It also makes loading the bullet easy as a result, even on a fouled barrel.

I shoot the 50 cal version. Best bullet I've personally shot from any muzzleloader. One hole accurate and deadly on deer.

I shoot a Remington UML with a Breechplug from Arrowhead rifles so I can shoot BH209.

My load is quite stout and gets close to 2,100 fps.
