Hammer HBC ballistic coefficient

I went back out to double check everything. Very similar shooting conditions. RH was about 30%, temp 38°. 1 mph wind at the target 0mph at the shooter. Shooting in the exact same
Place and exact same targets. Double checked at 417 yards and 605 yards(accidentally plugged in 600 cause I was thinking about it as I was trying to guess wind and fight mirage causing me to be a touch low)

Everything lined up just fine with that .352 G7 BC.

417 yards my phone said hold 5.25 MOA. So I dialed 5.25 MOA. Touch high and I didn't account for the thermal pushing right to left but I'm happy as that's within 2-3" of point of aim.

605 yards the call was 9.75 MOA. Once again didn't account for thermals blowing right to left and likely a touch down as well.

So a touch high on one and touch low on the other but I'll be honest the 605 yard target was in some serious mirage this morning so some of that might be me. Overall very happy with the results.

The BC's posted for the the regular Hammers are so hyper inflated it's funny, so maybe they are erring on the low side this time around?
That's not true for everyone. I do a lot of rifles in the hh's. Some are very lower some are under inflated. I've had both and it seems to hold true with most bullets. Over all bullets are usually listed a bit higher than they are but in them I've also had some that are low.
My last hammer hunter load was listed so low I thought I got some bad info loaded but it turned out I just had to adjust the bc higher.

We have to remember most these drops are probably done by Brian or Steve. And probably in one rifle. Which makes a lot of difference. If 5 different rifles were used then we average them it would be a better representation. But we all need to verify and adjust bc before we go out and shoot long range. So I'm not sure why people get bent about it. If you take any bc off the box and go you are more than likely gonna be way off at 1000 yards. Not sure I've had one that was correct. Even the 400gr laser I had to adjust.
We just get pleasantly surprised and think we did something wrong when it off a lot in the higher bc range. And disappointed when it's the other way because we all are hoping for and chasing higher bc.

Hasn't been my experience. Most have been pretty close which is why this kind of made me nervous having the BC line up so different. But I'll take it and seeing as how I can repeat results I'm good to go. I stick to shots less than 600 yards on game so for me this bullet should work well and I look forward to seeing terminal performance in a couple weeks on some aoudad, hogs, and deer.

Try leaving the BC at .277 and bump up your velocity to 3100fps in your ballistics calculator.

Wind calls will track better.

I true my 440yd elevation by adjusting Velocity in my calculator first

Then I true BC at 880yd

Seems to give me better results 👍

Just throwing it out there 😉

Happy New Year, and Happy Shooting!!

Why would you change the known? We can measure the speed. Seems like adjusting the bc till it lines up is a better way.

PRAGMATISM, my good man.

We.could get into the minutia of how BC's are not constant, etc etc.

But ultimately, I do what works.

How did it turn out for you, @Elkeater?

So I got everything to line up. What I ultimately landed on was bumping my speed from the chrono speed of 3037 to 3085 and dropping my BC to .295 G7 to get everything to line up. Then we field tested the 141 hammer HBC in Texas 5 animals that died. The HBC does seem to expand more violently than previous hammer versions and we had some very spectacular kills at 100, 145, 170, 220, and 305 yards. It hit so hard my buddies named my rifle the angry hammer.

Here's probably the most violent outcome. 100lb feral goat at 220 yards. The blood you see is what came out on impact not from the animal bleeding out. The goat was standing in front of the big blood spot on the rock in front of the crack it's laying in and dropped on the spot. If you look close you can see the hole blown out of the rock from the bullet impact in the center of the red puddle.

Great shooting, and good work taking the time to validate your data 👍

Congratulations on a successful hunt, and thank you for the report.

Looks like those HBC's really have some POP! 😲

Cheers!
