I want to get into the ELR game and i have a budget of $2500 for the rifle. Should i go with something out of the box or raise some more money for something custom? Any thoughts or suggestions?

That depends. If you want to shoot often, then get a custom rifle. You will keep it for many years.

Out of the box rifle will do just fine however it may not be under 1/2 MOA "all the time".

I will probably shoot as often as funds allow which should be about once a month. Do you have any suggestions on a custom rifle builder? I read about Gradous Custom Rifles in a magazine, have you ever heard of them and if so what are your thoughts?

I would give kirby allen a call and build either his 338 Allen Mag, 338 Allen Express, or 375 Allen Mag if you really want to dump some energy on target.

build something that shoots the .338 300gr berger or the .30 215-230gr berger. i would lean heavily toward the 338.

there are a ton of good smiths on here, so i don't want to start listing them lest i forget one.

have you checked len's guns he has on here. that would cut down your wait time to get it in your hands.

there is a ton of info on here, and the search engine on this site is great. you can find days of reading on the topic you're asking about.

good luck. make sure you save about 2k for optics. lots of guns shoot pretty dang good with a little load work up, not a lot of scopes are suited for this game.

Len's guns are a little out of my price range, but i might be able to raise some more money to get one of his. They look good and i know they are from a good source with a good reputation

Read and learn what it good on this site. Then watch classifieds on here, you can find right what you want and a good deal, alot have low round count

$2500 for optics AND rifle?

Savage Long Range Hunter in .338. Luepy Mk 4 and spend the rest on rings base and tripod.

You might find some stuff used and save some coin and get better glass, or do a 338 Edge build of a savage action.

I think $5k is a much more reasonable budget to keep in mind. Once you have the rifle you'll need to shoot it. That cost $$$ for ammo or $$$ for reloading components and equipment. Not to mention a decent hard case/Sling.

My budget is $2500 for the rifle only. I know optics are gonna be $1-2k more

Factory versus custom is your decision. Keep an eye open for a used edge or 300 win, rum. I definitely not recommend an Allen mag for first elr rig. I had one but was scared to shoot it enough to learn it and the sport. I was worried about barrel life and cost per shot. They are a lot more economical learning tools available. I love my edge with hybrid bullets. I would not be scared of a 300 either. You can probably find a good used rifle and save some money to use else where.

I would suggest the classifieds as well if you can find a good used custom you are going to be money ahead shorter delivery time and if you find yourself in need of a new barrel in the future all the ground work will have been done making replacement easier and less costly than starting from scratch...starting with a 300 win mag is an awesome idea. The cartrige is well suited for elr and is easy to reload and find quality components for .

If you step into a Lapua or Allen mag make sure you have the scratch saved up for components as they can be pretty spendy and shooting factory ammo is pretty much a budget disaster.

2500 Gives You A LOT of room for just the rifle.

Stiller action $1200
Kreiger 1/10 twist #7 contour or above 28" or longer $300
Decent Stock $700-1000
Trigger $100-200

It can be done. I agree though watch the classified always cheaper to buy vs build.

300 WM is a good choice with Berger 230 GR you can stay supersonic to a mile long if you are up high.
