I think it is sad that the AF has been trying for so long to retire them. Pilots love them, troops on the ground love them even more.
Before the first Gulf War, we were told they are considering them for drug interdiction mission at the borders. However, after their stellar performance, they upgraded (AGCS, GCAS, LASTE, etc) them instead. In 1995, we were told there are TCTOs/upgrades until 2025.

I was tasked out with a proto type Scout Platoon to test got to watch them from atop a HUMV. I don't know anyone that wanted them to be retired.
 
I'm leading a big modification on the ones in my unit right now. In the next year, they'll have a new giant touchscreen in the cockpit, 3d audio, jam resistant GPS, new updated radios and capabilities, ability to carry small diameter bombs, etc. The AF is still trying to scrap the jet though. 🙄
