After a few weeks belonging here and reading about all the custom rifles in the works and the efforts to break 3000fps with a 30" barrel( I dont get that) ... I just cant get them images out of my head of the two young guys with 946 yard cow elk kill using a basically stock rifle and some tweaked ammo and a spotter. Seem like thats the greater challege, getting a mass produced rifle to drop em or group em at 1kiloyard.

First off, I want to say I don't have a custom rifle (I wish I could afford one!). the simple fact is that it takes a lot of skill and effort to be able to shoot consistanly at those ranges, no matter what equipment you are using.

I could not agree more. I dotn think I could do it.

A lot of the 1k BR clubs have an unofficial Factory class shooting 5 shots at 1k. Most of the guns will go around 10-12" as the norm at 1k with some going as low as sub 5" on rare occasion and as high as, well reaaaal large.

Old rule of thumb that is easy to go by. If the gun shoots .5MOA at 100, then you can plan on it being a 1 MOA gun at best at 1k.

We have top end custom guns shooting .1 or .2 at 100 as a norm, most of the groups are in the 4"-7" range as the norm. We just hosted the IBS Nationals and had 1 group at 2.2", and about 6-8 in the sub 4" range. This was out of 140 of the top guns and shooters in the US.

I thot I read once that the Orig 1000 Yrd PA Benchrest CLub had a factory rifle class, but I am not sure. It would be cool to try 1k with a factory rifle.

PA does not, Ohio does, I think that MO and Iowa do. NC does also.
