I had this barrel vise since the 80s. It used a top plate with 4 bolts. It served me well on fat bench rest barrels, and straight taper AR barrels, but not on sporter barrels where the straight is very short.

I happen to have bar stock aluminum that I thought would work with my idea. Replaced the one piece top with two pieces. The holes for the grade 8 clamp bolts were elongated to allow them to pivot somehow.

The front piece clamps the fat section and the back piece follows the taper. End result is like having two barrel vises without using any specific sleeves.

A buddy brought over a stubborn factory 700 barrel that just refused to loosen. Using a Brownells wrench, one whack with a 2 pound short handled hammer receiver spun without slippage.

Picture shown is an old model 70 target rifle with a factory target barrel.
