Aoudad Hunt

MTO's Aoudad season went great, shot some nice rams. MTO has been offering Aoudad hunts for 2 years. Now that we have a better understanding of the ground we hunt….we've figured out where the mature rams like to hang out. 6.5 PRC is a hammer, plenty enough gun to hunt Aoudads & most other critters too. Thanks for asking, have a great rest of your week.

I shot my last one at 310yds with my 30-06. The one in shot 2 years earlier was at 360yds and I used my 6.5 creedmoor.

In my experience these animals are no tougher than any other animal. People in Texas like to play them up but they die like anything else. Most Texans just don't know much about anything outside of Texas.

And I watched an immature ram soak up 3 rounds from a hot .308 (175 @ 2800) at less than 100 yards so…….

All goats are tough--but not immune to bullets. The more I shoot--I really like the heavy for caliber 22s -25's.

We have shot a few now with a 22 creedmoor--mainly with 88 ELDs and 85.5 bergers. They work. I still like a 338 mainly for the heavy bullet and the good windbucking of slick 230 ELDs and 250 bergers I shoot.

I have honestly seen more drop to the shot with the 22 creed and a 257 wby --than I have with a heavier caliber.

This fall we had a very good friend bring his son. They shot a very nice ram at 320 yards, with a 300 wby mag. Shot him right behind the shoulder (too far back for Aoudad) with a 165 grain bullet we watched him run off and bed down--it took awhile for him to die...does that make him tough? Or poorly shot? Most everyone that shoots the first time shoots too far back--the point of the shoulder will crumble them...again 25-06 is a good minimum--it will kill the heck out of Aoudad--anything above that--with a good bullet--you got plenty.

We're booked to go again in 2027, I'll be taking my 6.5 creedmoor. 18" barrel shooting a 140g bullet.

Heart, double lungs, high shoulder(both) you will have a dead ram PDQ. Shoot a 300 pound ram anywhere else that is not skeletal and you may get to see some new country.

I've killed a few with my 6.5 creedmoor.
My father had killed 30-40 with his. Pick a good bullet that hold together and send it.

I've killed a few with my 6.5 Grendel also running 97gr hammers. As for guides depends on what type of hunt you want. Backpack safari style? Many options from hill country to west Texas
I'm curious in the Grendel, how big of aoudad? That's your favorite bullet. ;)

Montana Trophy Outfitters offers Aoudad hunts in Texas & Mexico. Private land & free range. We have killed some very nice rams since offering these hunts in 2023.

In regards to caliber, we have had clients use 6.5 Creedmoor up to 30-378 Weatherby. Shoot the caliber of rifle you are most accurate & comfortable with. Shot placement is the key, we have yet to lose a ram because of too lite of caliber or bullet choice.
Those are some beauts! I wish I could use you.
