Aoudad Hunt

Will pm once you get enough posts. I took mine with a 6.5 RPM and a .338 Win. Mag. Whatever you shoot well at long distance will likely work.

I've killed a few with my 6.5 creedmoor.
My father had killed 30-40 with his. Pick a good bullet that hold together and send it.

I've killed a few with my 6.5 Grendel also running 97gr hammers. As for guides depends on what type of hunt you want. Backpack safari style? Many options from hill country to west Texas

Thanks for the info. I'm in great shape and wouldn't mind hiking for them if required. I wasn't sure if there was a normal hunting procedure. (ie) Safari style or backpack. I have a 30-06 and a 6.5 creed. I shoot the 6.5 better at longer distances.

Congrats on your first Aoudad hunt.

On caliber I'd use at least a 25 caliber. Shoot what you shoot's well. I'd say a 25-06 is a good minimum. I've seen them shot with 270, 30-06, 7mm mag, 300 mag...all seem to work good --use a good bullet. have shot them with everything from a 222 to a 358 Norma mag--my favorite is a 338 RCM--but probably shot the most with a 257 wby just because I have hunted with one longer. Again use a good bullet--and shoot them futher forward than you think, almost on the point of the shoulder.

Lots of good options out there for Aoudad hunts. Desert Safaris outfits a lot. Rowdy McBride has a lot of good properties leased--and outfits. Wes Mundy at double diamond outfitters shoots some good sheep every year. Also, Jim Breck Bean at high west shoots good sheep too.

I have shot my fair share --and just got through taking my son and 2 of his friends on a hunt. I'm 49 and watching those young guys crush hills and not even look tired--makes me realize the circle of life--but I'm still going to chase them for as long as I can.

Your 30-06 would be great out of the guns you own but it'd be a great exuse to get a long range magnum. Shots are 100-400 yds typically and can be across windy canyons. I ranch in west Texas and have aoudad on here, they are tough animals and we have a 270 or bigger rule. Aoudad shooter 1975 mentioned some great outfitters, some others are also bubba Glosson, Tye Vick, wildlife systems.

Thanks for the info. Now I'll look more serious into getting the 300 PRC that I have been wanting.

Never a bad idea to get another rifle. That being said I think the point made about tough bullet and shot placement is more the key. The biggest ones I've ever killed have been with a 6.5 creedmore.
Also the 257 weatherby would be a perfect setup. Very flat so no need for dialing elevation for said distances of 100-400. But I'd never tell someone not to buy another rifle.

We have aoudad here on this ranch in Central TX. We are sick and tired of guys wounding and loosing aoudad and orex with 6.5 needmores to the point we may refuse to let guys hunt these animals with them. As was stated above a 270 W minimum but preferably 300WM, 300 WSM or the 300 PRC.

If you find a guide, they are probably gonna err on the side of major overkill because they see a lot of bad shots and inexperienced hunters. They will also have the final say in what "minimum" they will allow you to bring along.

Outfitters also suffer from somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy by recommending cartridges that most people can't shoot well. Said people then make poor shots on animals, which reassures the notion that Aoudad are in some way a tougher animal than most to kill.

I just put a .223 through the lungs of my ram at almost 300 yards and he was able to stumble 10 before he was done. It's also my go-to for whitetails, which are the exact same size as Aoudad, so take that for what it's worth.

30-40? Dang. Does he live in west Texas?

Montana Trophy Outfitters offers Aoudad hunts in Texas & Mexico. Private land & free range. We have killed some very nice rams since offering these hunts in 2023.

In regards to caliber, we have had clients use 6.5 Creedmoor up to 30-378 Weatherby. Shoot the caliber of rifle you are most accurate & comfortable with. Shot placement is the key, we have yet to lose a ram because of too lite of caliber or bullet choice.
