8 lbs. Hodgdon 870 powder discovered, what to do with it?

While recently cleaning out a relatives estate, I came across 8 bright shiny 1 lb. tins of Hodgdon 870 in their original shipping box. I don't know what year it was shipped (I'm guessing 30-years ago) but it has been stored in a dry compartment of relatively stable temperature and low humidity ever since. I sent a note to Hodgdon regarding old reloading info to no avail. I reload and shoot .264 Win Mag 140 & 160 gr., 8MM Rem Mag 200 & 220 GR., and .375 H&H 300-gr. as well as many other lighter calibers. Any reloading suggestions?

I used it in a 7x300 and a 7mm416 shot very well, some guys in my area still looking for it. Will work in your 2 bigger cals. keep it!

I would use it in the .264. If memory serves correctly that is the cartridge for which it was developed. As far as the .375 I would go with either 4320 or 4350.

Yep it really does great in the 264 Win mag.

Great powder in large overbore cases such as the 30/378 WM, 300 RUM etc.with heavy bullets. I use it in my 30/378 and find it to be the best powder i've tried to date with 200-220 gr bullets.

In about 1975 I used 118 grains behind 180 grainer in a .30-.378. Started a flinch so traded it off.

we use to dip the case in 870 fill it up, top it off and cram a bullet in it.......crunch crunch lol slow burning powder it is

Was the Weatherby 30-368 factory available Mr.Coyle or was this back in wild cat days?

Used it in 25-06AI, 264win mag, 300 Weatherby and 270-300weatherby.
Very slow powder between Rl33 & RL50. I still have about 6# of it. Like RL33 when u get the load near max it cleans up nicely. Use hot primers like Rem91/2M or Fed215M

Its no surprise that Hodgdon didn't return your email OR if they did would not support the old product.

No company is going to guarantee a product that is that old & any comment made could leave them liable!
