7mm rem mag. bullets

I have a 7mm Rem mag that I am going on a whitetail trip with me this yr and am starting to think about reloading for it.I put on a TDS recticle scope on the gun and want to be able to consitently hit out to 400 yds. I have purchased some 140 gr Accbonds, some 140 gr Nosler partioners, and some 139 BTSP Hornady bullets. I have a variety of powder to try. My question is I have read that 140 gr bullets arn't that good in a 7mm mag. And that I should be using a 160 gr. Can someone tell me if they use 140 gr bullets with success. Thanks for any input.

I tried the lighter weight bullets in my 7RM and discovered they were very explosive. The cartridge was designed for heavier bullets. I have gone to 175 grain bullets and like it much better.

I am loading Barnes 145gr LRX in 7mag and so far they look promising. I have yet to shoot a deer or elk with them so terminal performance is yet to be challenged, but at the range they are awesome. I hope to know more the end of Sept after the season opens.

For deer 140 are fine, if your worried about em being destructive from the velocity you can always load lighter charges and slow em down some.

Like Flashhole <-- (I see what you did there lol) I like em heavier too, but the deer here are big and I hunt Elk also.

I use 139 grn for plinking and varments
150 grn ETIP for deer I have used the etip for deer and am very happy with the performance, 1 shot 1 kill (but e tips are expensive)
My rifle likes 150 grn best (1in9 twist), your rifle may be differant my sudjestion is to load up a few of 150, 160 and 175 and use what your rifle likes best at 400 yrds

With 7mmRM..
I have shot deer with 180 VLDs, 162 SSTs, and 150 BTs [ballistic tip].
I have also practiced with 120 BTs, 140 BTs, 160 gr Barnes TSX, and 175 gr Hornady soft point.

I like the 150 gr BT stopping power best.
I like the 140 gr BT long range groups the best.

The 150 BT is accurate and will pass the 500 yd barrier with ease....just in case a longer shot is necessary.

I'm terribly fond of the 140 sierra(either bt or fb) in the 7rem and have about 300 loaded. I also use the 150 nos bt for kicks, but the nos bullets are getting spendy faster than the others it seems lately. I've been getting 60% or better weight retention with 140 sierra's into deer if I can even catch one; usually they are pass through.

I agree with lefty. The 140 sierras are great. I've used them for years with great results. They have taken moose, deer, and elk for me at ranges under 300 yards. I've also tried the 150 and 160 sierras. But the 140s just work

in the last week ive killed 8 deer with that bullet out of my stw and 2 more last night out of a 7 rem mag. couldnt ask for better performance then its given me.
