Hi. I am building a 6.5 on a 300 Win Mag action and am not sure if I should go with a 6.5 Rem Mag or a 264 Win Mag? I am using a 26" shillen 1 in 8 twist and want to shoot 140 VLD's.

It looks like the 6.5 Rem MAg may be the way to go to get 3000 fps and almost 99% case capacity vs around 75% case capacity of the 264 Win Mag.

Please give me the good and bad of each?

P.S. would like to get around 1500 or more shots out of this barrel.

Hey Elkstrayer

I have done 2 rebarrels of 300 win mags to 6.5 rem mag. I have also previously owned 2 of the 264 win mag.

Go with the 6.5 rem mag. Both of the ones I have done feed perfectly and you will have plenty of room to set those long 6.5 bullets way out.

I am getting 3200 fps right now with 130 gr Scirrocco II's with RL17 and have run 140 gr Sierra GK's and Accubonds at 3100 fps. The 6.5 rem mag is easy to load for. IME not so on the 264 win mag

You should get much better barrel life with the 6.5 rem mag since you can use faster powders in the 4350 range. The win mag will need the slowest powder you can find in the 870 range

I've heard that the rem mag has drawbacks, compared to the 284 norma, while having the same case capacity. I'm not sure about the 264 win mag, but it sounds very similar to the norma, which is a .284 win case necked down to .264.
