i know I know this question has been asked a million times but I'm finding conflicting info and I keep going back and forth. I'm building a switch barrel LR target hunting rifle. It's going on a SR3 with a game warden stock and Wyatt box, the first barrel (deer rifle) is a 1:9 proof carbon 280 AI which I already have set up. For My second barrel I want a 30 cal. I was going 300 win mag. But have been considering 30 nos and 300 prc. Most likely this will be a target chambering unless I draw an oryx tag or someone in my family draws and elk tag( I bow hunt elk). I want to run a 215 hybrid 3k plus and maybe play with the 230 gn pills. I've had a couple 300 win mags and never could accurately get them to 3k. More like 2910-2930. Is it worth chasing the extra velocity with the 30 nos or the 300 prc? Also is there a big difference in barrel life of say a 30 nos running 3100 and a 300 win mag running 2900 with 215's? Part of me just wants something different but those proof barrels are pricey and I like to shoot! Sorry for beating a dead horse but mostly interested in real world experience with these cartridges. Thanks!

broz did a cool comp on the 30 nos and the 300wm

if your looking for speed 300 rum

Everything comes at a price. You start running into diminishing returns as you go past the WM.
Id take a nosler or rum before the prc. If you are hunting 600 or less, save yourself some recoil and get the wm. The 215 Berger is easy to dial in and is tremendously effective. I don't consider any of the other 30s a full step forward, minus the 30-378 weatherby.
The KISS principle applies here.
If you really want a bigger hammer, the 338 edge comes to mind. 250 gr at 3k ought to get a critters attention.

This is a test target from my builder shooting factory 215 Berger's from my 300wm. When it gets here I'll see what MV I get.

Atm the .300 PRC is probably going to be the better choice. At first I knocked it and thought it was a gimmick but it does have its advantages over the other two.

Win mag is awesome I have had several but why stick with it and the belt? You can get a little more case capacity with the PRC and have the option of high end affordable boxed ammo without compromising the seating depth with factory ammunition as it's designed to hve Bullets seated out.

Check out the latest Gunwerks Podcast, it's a bit of a marketing spill but still worth a listen, mite help you make up your mind.

Sorry for this, but I have to be told I'm wrong. Read the op three times to make sure, but I am old and a newbie at this. His switch barrel is already a 280 ai, so without swapping bolts too, best bet is going to be 300 Sherman for the other barrel. Will read again, once again sorry if I'm wrong.

I have had a 300 Win since 1969 and you get ammo just about anywhere BUT I toy with another 30 And my only choice would be 300 Norma Mag It was chosen as SOCOM rifle the groups at 500 yards people are shooting are tight and 200+ grain bullet will lay down large animals at long range
