270 Win 165 Matrix load suggestions

I recently had a 270 Win put together with an 8 twist Hart barrel at 26". Built it to shoot the 165/175 Matrix and if Berger releases it the 170.

I have only run H4831sc through it and am only getting about 2640 fps. I didn't specify to the gunsmith to make the throat long (first build won't make that mistake twice) so I cannot seat long before touching the lands, therefore pressure starts about 55.5 gr.

Looking for other powder suggestions from some of you all that have these.

Thanks
Shane

Alliant Rl22,23,25,26,33,4000MR. Norma N560,N570(guessing), IMR4451??

Ream it out to 270 Sherman or 270AI!!

Maybe somebody might run a quickload simulation??

7828 SSC or the new 7977.

My 270 is a 10tw so I won't be able to experiment with heavies. More likely to go the other way with running copper fast.

I too am in SoCal so I have copper loads for it as well. It really likes the CEB 140 gr MTH. They just cost alittle too much to shoot regularly. Save them for that special hunt where copper is required.

I have a 1:8 30" Lilja barrel 3-groove on my .270 AI and I'm pushing the 175 VLD @ 2993 FPS (my current accuracy load) with 58gr H4831SC Win brass BR2 .040" off the lands regular throat.

Powders used: H1000, H4350, Retumbo, RL33, IMR 7828SSC, and H4831SC

Primers used: BR2 and WLR

The best velocity was with 7828SSC but ran into pressure signs and group opened up.

I think you would gain 100fps with RL22, more with RL25 or RL33. Magpro might get you 150fps. Norma N560 might do pretty well also. You should be able to reach 2800+ with the optimal powder.

7828ssc and RL22 shoot about the same in my 270Sherman(+10% powder capacity over 270win).. so it should do well also. I am getting 2950fps with the 165 Matrix in a 22" barrel at max pressure-that should be 3050 or so in a 26". 10% more powder gets about 5% increase in speed so 3050-150 is 2900.

In these days of iffy powder choices it's tough. I'm a longer barrel person at 29 inches and 15 some years ago I used 7828 with mag primers. I've since tried H1000, RL-25 & 33, Magpro, and retumbo with 169.5's Wildcat VLD's

7828 hot summer 90+ degrees I end up taking my rounds to a BR shoot in a cooler with one cool pack and keep them in the shade.

H1000 with mag primers is a good choice. I don't try for max speed, I've found that right at 2800 with a low ES always worked best Probably in the 58-60K on pressure

Refinishing my stock with tung oil. 8.5 pound target barrel

That Sir looks like a Tang Safety. My favorite rifles. I have a 300 Winnie that will get a new barrel soon. Dropped it in a Mcmillan and really like the feel and handling.

I live in Ca and am concerned about the temp stability of the "non extreme" powders.
I know any good hunting with this rig will most likely be cooler and hopefully considerably higher.

Anyone have temp stability of IMR 7977 or Win Supreme 780. In the Hodgdon website they give the highest velocities on paper. I can find Superformance, IMR 7828, some of the Alliant- probably RE22, Hybrid 100v. Not alot of each but a pound or two at a time.

I don't know anything about the new imr or 780, But over the years I also worked up my hot weather 7828 and the SSC to acceptable case life and pressure. I just wrote Summer time on the 50 round cases. For sub 45 degree hunting I had worked up a load with @ 1-1.5 more grains of powder and chronoed them at the same speed and impact point.

Then as new slower powders showed up I tried them. These long bullets kind of limit you to @ 58 grains in a 270 Winchester case. Other cases like RPeters are like a grain or two less in volume.

Since you have a short throat, I would consider renting a 270 AI reamer which adds about 6-7 grains of case volume.

Wildcat went out of business years ago and I ran out of 169.5's and I kind of gave up on F1 class shooting. I zeroed in on 150 BT's and they are a real game getter pushed at higher speeds. Then Matrix bullets open up and I just never got back into the .277 cal. I went to 243 win to have fun with

I'm thinking budlight is the goto guy on this topic. I'm of a mind set that 140s are enough bullet for the Winny. However I've be wrong about many things...:)
