264 kills update

Long story…..after a several years on the railroad…I had great money. I went nuts, best guns, equipment and gear. 3 trips to BC. 340 wby 185 Barnes X bullet at 3,400. 5 huge bears, shot from 80 yards to 400. Not a single quick and decisive kill. A few bears require 2 hits, pencil through…Extremely disappointing bullet. I've since switched to accubonds by Nosler. 375 ultra down to 300 win…rifle and encore handcannons. Exceptional kills, huge bears, moose, giant deer, coyote…lights out! Wicked accurate, easy to find a good load, devastating kills. I'm not knocking Barnes, not at all. But the accubonds are superb!

I used the 100gr Partition a fair amount from the 264WM. I got one of the first Sendero SFIIs when they came out. Pushed them around 3700FPS with RL 22 and they killed alot of WT and mule deer and a couple black bears. My kids (4) all started with the 260 and 100 grain Partitions as well. They are great killers with the longest being right at 400 yards and the closest being right under the tree. 2 bears with the 260 as well. Everything dies quick. You get a little more bloodshot meat than you'd expect, but not unreasonable. Great bullet.

The plan was to take the lungs out, even with a misplaced shot that bear ought to have shown some signs of being shot. It was a 10 yard shot, .35 caliber bullet at 2500fps. I was on a shooting rail when I made the shot. It did a 180 and left as quickly as it came in. But is was like coughing while it was running. That sapling was about two inches in diameter and that blood was a couple of inches above the knee, 200 yards from where it was shot. Everything that I have hit with this Whelen has gone 30 yards tops with no issues following a track, or it dropped where it was shot. I still do not know, thst was the question about the reason for not using Barnes bullets anymore.

Believe it or not also wicked performance out of a 340 with a balistic tip too. I'm a firm believer in the Nosler bullet….im not knocking the Barnes, just too many bad kills for me. With great hits too!

We have been using them for years, with great results. I am not sure if we ought to be thinking about something else besides these?? All we hunt with are monolithics.

in regards to the 200 NBT out of the 340 wby, hands down my fav and choice for all 340 work including bruins!

I've never shot 100gr bullets in mine, but have killed 3-4 moose, a bunch of whites and mule deer plus many bears with 130-140gr bullets in the 264. I personally wouldn't load down the bullet weight like that for any bigger animals.

My own current load is still a 129ABLR @3250fps, and probably is the best load I've ever run through 264's. Put that one together before the 142's existed and have been very happy.

Here's a 7ft Alberta bear I killed checking fences by the cows a few yrs ago.. 129ABLR from 264, and just one single bullet into his chest. Bear was instantly done deal finished. Never flinched and not a step. Shot was roughly 150 yards.

Don't go too light with your bullets, a heavier one is your friend on bigger game
